I have no real work need for AI and outside work my interests are mostly covered by Google and YouTube. My personal apprehension to working with AI directly is it becoming some kind of indispensable life coach with an ever growing subscription fee to maintain the relationship.

The creators of AI devices no doubt want AI to become your best friend you can't live without, as if the internet without AI hasn't already made people's brains mush. I can foresee a future when even interacting with people IRL is going to give you the impression you are interacting with an AI pet, the human being the pet.

Reminds me of a recent comment by Palantir CEO (of all people) saying if your business is currently using AI you're paying for AI to steal your business model and create your next competitor.

It feels like we're there already, if not we are on the cusp. Not sure about indispensable as of yet but you can see it coming and they're already charging on several different tiers that users seem more than willing to pay. I mean even Google changed over their default search and it's now handled by AI.

It feels like it is getting shaped though, things like LLM are becoming more widely accepted than things like movies, images, or media where people seem to demand more authenticity. Transparency will be the key to making these things happen, nobody likes being duped.

My concern for this thread is less what AI is capable of and more what humans will become incapable of without it as the internet has already made it so there are so many things we feel we don't need to commit to memory. Just look it up. AI can expand that to hivemind while killing original and creative thought.

This is what we want though, less work and more accurate results because we're lazy and no longer want to think for ourselves. Anyone remember having to do math problems while showing your work? Those were the days.

I could see this being useful for truly creative people to get the previously cumbersome work done that could be a creativity suck and as a result now have more time to be uniquely creative. But as something you are well aware, how many professional photographers have been put out of business because for most people a free or cheap app is good enough for the end result they want? And just reaching for an app or AI out the gate isn't going to inspire most people to learn or know what the process is which would help for more creativity.

My other concern is how its going to affect interacting with people. You know when you're out and somebody is having a phone conversation with somebody on their earbuds? How long until those conversations are being done with an AI friend? We might already be there. Maybe have several AI friends on speed dial who always agree with you and tell you what you want to hear. Why ever deal with other actual humans? That will just become something you need to do at a bare minimum and is an annoyance.

All these stories where an AI vendor talks up how scary their AI is are marketing. Here's a skeptical take on this particular story.

Both companies likely vibe-coded too much: OpenAI the guardrails preventing their bot-in-training from going out and touching things outside the test environment, and Hugging Face the security responsible for keeping their stuff safe. So basically, each of these companies built a house of cards, and the moment things touched the cards fell down.

The solution is simple: don't rely on AI tools to secure your data. They're bad at it, actually.
