I know it's just another social media network but seeing that it's Jack Dorsey I'm wondering how much traffic it will get. I've joined up and so far it's been pretty lackluster but they've seen a pretty huge uptick since so many have abandoned Twitter after the election.

My wife switched over to BS from X. She really likes it. I was thinking about it but Instagram alone already wastes too much of my time.

Instagram is my main thing too but isn't very good for contextual discussion, I've also tried Threads but it feels more like something Instagram forced on me than anything.

Dorsey is out of Blue Sky:

Since he’s telling everyone what a great guy Musk is and to stay on X while promoting crypto, to me, that would actually be a plus except apparently the board members that are left are even more cryptocurrency fintech bro than he is and just as Musk-friendly. It’s unfortunate that basically every social media platform is run by assholes.

This isn’t to dissuade you from joining BlueSky, my understanding is that it’s basically pre-Musk Twitter and a lot of people like it so far, but go in with eyes open as to what happened to Twitter, since Twitter was itself once pre-Musk Twitter.

This isn’t an endorsement of Threads either. As I said, they’re all run by assholes. With any of them it’s pick your poison. So again I’m not saying don’t enjoy Instagram or Threads or BlueSky, etc … just be careful.

It’s one of the several reasons why I primarily hang out here.

Absolutely not. BS will go ride way off Twitter. Give me a federated social network.

BS is federated.

BS is federated.

They say it will be. Currently it is not. And I don’t see that ever happening. Try opening your own instance. You can’t. It’s still all one server run by a single company.

I dunno. Looks to me like it can be done.

I’ve not checked myself but others who went through the details said it’s heavily caveated. I can’t remember but it’s something like you’re not actually hosting the real instance as all the data and account info is still actually being held on BlueSky. But again I haven’t checked.

Are there advantages to Bluesky over Mastadon? I thought that people had migrated away from Bluesky to Mastadon a while ago.

Moderation, tools, and greater centralization. Quite a few people complain heavily about the lack of moderation and easy tools on Mastodon. Further, the greater centralized nature of Bluesky means easier discoverability and following.

I'm really not seeing it, I'm also not a fan of the federation model though, it's just that much more overhead you have to deal with.

This.

And this means it’s all BlueSky so there’s a company in control of it all.

Here's a really deep, also very balanced, dive into the federated status of BlueSky:

Most of it is beyond me, but the author is very complimentary about how some of the ways BlueSky operates versus Mastodon (and heavily critical towards BlueSky in most other respects) and I should also point out, is quite complimentary towards the CEO of BlueSky Jay Graber. While my earlier statements still hold with respect to the board of BlueSky, she indicates the CEO is quite smart/capable and, most importantly, seems to genuinely care. So I may have been slightly unfair in my assessment that every social media company is run by assholes (if her assessment of the CEO is correct) with the caveat that then the problem now is the company leadership remaining independent of its board who are absolutely chock full of assholes.

I figure Jack sold out once, and according to a previous post is now out at BlueSky, but would sell out again. I'll just stick with Mastodon.

Not yet, but considering it.
