Apple and Foxconn successfully lobbied in the state of Karnataka, India, for a new law to allow two-shift production in the country. The law makes Karnataka one of the most flexible places to work in India.

The state of Karnataka passed an amendment to the laws allowing 12-hour shifts and night shifts for women. Women dominate electronics production lines in parts of Asia, but are underrepresented in the Indian workforce. The legislation limits the maximum workweek to 48 hours, but also increases the number of overtime allowed to 145 over a three-month period from the previous 75 hours.

“India will be the next major manufacturing center,” said an anonymous Indian government official, “but when we compare India with other countries, we should be very efficient in terms of increasing productivity.”

This is just sad... basic human decency and respect to workers aside, what are they even trying to achieve with this? Knowing India, the work attitude is already, well, lacking, how is it going to get better by making people work for 12 hours?
