I don’t understand how this can be true, while planning to release a touch screen old MacBook Pro later this year or early next year?
Do they release it with a base M6? A M5 Pro/Max?

What I think they are positing is that the more powerful chips will skip M6 and launch early next year with M7s instead so those touchscreen MacBooks"Ultras" will launch with M7 Pros/Maxes (so Ultras also won't come out this year but early next year). Maybe? Otherwise, yeah it doesn't make sense.

I thought Gurman said the touchscreen MacBook was coming this year or early next year? This report says the M7 Pro and Max arrive late 2027.
Having said that, I was sure he was wrong on the M3 Ultra so…
Good point. I saw him say that the M7 to be released soon after the M6, but not missed that he's still saying the M7 Pro/Max/Ultra not to be released until late 2027/2028. So yeah there's an apparent contradiction here.
He was right on the M3 Ultra but wrong many other times and the further out his predictions, the less likely they are to be true. Also the M3 Ultra had other evidence behind it that we'd all forgotten (the missing M3 identifier). So maybe, but this is far enough out that it's a coin flip and we won't know for at least a year.

I also don’t understand why they would go to the trouble of meaningfully updating their design for the M6 only to shortly make an M7. Why not wait a few months??
To be fair they released the M4 pretty soon after the M3 ... BUT that was pretty different from what is being described. They released the M3 base/Pro/Max all at once and the M4 was only released on the iPad Pro with everything else coming as expected. So, not totally without precedent but still ...

The article reads to me like this is a change of plans, so, I think previous rumors that turn out to be true will adjust accordingly. I agree it’d be weird to launch the OLED Macbook Pros just for the base M6.

That would be a non-starter for me. I’m ready to upgrade from my M1 Max and am waiting for this Macbook Ultra (or whatever they call it), but not for a base M6. Rather have an m5 max than an m6, unless the m6 is something completely unexpected.

Wonder if it's because of the DRAM pricing being so expensive right now, and the limited market for the high end machines at the price they'd need to sell them for due to memory supply shock. They've already been nerfing / limited supply on the Studios, if they are going to have issues getting enough RAM to make them viable I can see them sitting out m6 pro/ultra until prices become more affordable. Building them will be a lot of outlay for something they may not be able to sell in enough volume.

Prices aren't going to be "more affordable" for five years. So Any Apple hardware strategy takes that into account.
