Years ago, after leaving BlackBerry, I pitched the idea to Apple, then Google how they could put Amazon out of business and "Save Small Downtowns Across America" by empowering small businesses (not big box stores) with inventory and POS systems that were in the cloud.

Yeah....more than two dozen patent submissions became standalone apps or features of our competitors. Really hated the visionless assholes on our patent review committee. :(. (BlackBerry).

Virtually any good idea will eventually be picked up by someone else.

I still think the shopping experience that it gives you a heads up as you move about your day to snag something that you want on sale, near you - likely only the OS companies can pull off.

It would have been really satisfying to stick it to Amazon and the big box stores though...and give a competitive advantage to the small shop owners. I wonder how much of that Square has done.
