Every time I try to use Siri for something basic on my MBP it doesn't seem to understand. Just one of several simple requests that has failed, yes I can go to spotlight and add the parameters or manually browse and open files but shouldn't have to. All it does is acts like a search engine referring you to sites for help.

I don’t believe that’s something Siri is advertised as being able to do yet? Awareness of your files, personal information, and such is all supposed to be part of the “new” Siri that is allegedly coming (presumably available for testing at WWDC, on June 8?). That said, as usual, I would suspect it to be less capable on macs then on iOS/iPadOS, since that’s where apple focuses its efforts.

Of all the things that violate privacy these days this isn't one I would consider problematic, especially if they simply stored everything on the computer itself. Frankly I'm surprised at the lack of functionality of this thing, it's nowhere near a personal assistant of any kind, really just a search engine.

Somehow I smell the composted remains of Sherlock.
Yeah after reading up on this it seems like Apple really dropped the ball with AI and is struggling to keep up. In one sense I don't mind because outside of LLM I really don't use it much but they're nowhere near the level of Anthropic or OpenAI.

well, given that the 27 version of each OS will have, essentially, Gemini built-in, should be better going forward. Guess we’ll see.

I see, that makes sense now. I just sort of went into this blindly as I've never really used Siri and incorrectly assumed it would be able to perform what seems to be basic functionality.

In the end it's really just using voice commands instead of pointing and clicking, yet they'll have to tie it to a cloud service in order to pull off the logic. It is what it is but I would think at some point this would be something they can bake into an OS while keeping it local.

Siri has improved slightly since inception, but it's still incapable of doing many things I would have wanted it to do. I expected something like the assistant in Apple's Knowledge Navigator, but instead it was only good for setting alarms, asking for navigation in CarPlay, and other simple tasks. As @Cmaier said, Siri in upcoming iOS versions should be much more capable.

Apple has been sharply criticized for being behind, but given the ongoing backlash against AI and the company's stated focus on privacy, the approach may turn out to be the right one. We'll know more at the WWDC in a couple weeks.
