After their son came out, this conservative Christian couple went into a closet of their own

That’s a lot of pain and misery all in the name of whatever version of god it is they believe in.

Is this what god worries about? Who’s jerking off or who someone else is sleeping with?

It’s time to move on from this Bronze Age nonsense.

well seems for once Christian parents suffer for their hate of gays.

In fairness, they moved past their suffering and had a truly inspiring story. It was a long story and took a while to get to the good part. The short version is they now accept their son and visit other churches to help other parents deal with the things they overcame. In the end they learned what Harry P. knew all along, that a closet is a horrible place to live.

Summary: Parent learn son is gay. Parents turn into horrible people. Parents learn and grow. Parents turn into great people. Parents now help other parents skip the "parents turn into horrible people" step.

It is a good story, but without the fairy tales all based on an entity that is likely non-existent, it seems like a lot of pain for no good reason.

I understand it’s unrealistic to think a lot of people will abandon their faith and that they have to fight these battles within that framework, but from the outside looking in, it seems like a huge expense based on nothing.

I’m kind of at the point with Trumpism where this kind of behavior needs pointed out, and if people invoke god, they ought to be prepared to defend their beliefs, especially when they try to legislate on them. Because for every happy ending, there’s a lot of bad ones.

Jesus may let all those kids die a heinous slow death from cancer, but two men sleep together and the gloves come off.

I understand your point of view. But we do still have freedom of religion in this country. That might change if the election doesn't go as planned, but for now they're free to do as they please. If they're going to do that thing, I can at least applaud how they''re doing it. We have FAR too many examples of people doing it wrong. 🤷‍♂️

I am not anti-religious. I mean, in a sense I am, but I would never fault someone who goes to church and has beliefs. To me, it should be like Yoga or deep sea diving. Some do it, I do not, your hobbies do not affect my day. It’s the freedom from religion a lot of these folks seem to forget, and when people use their religion to restrict freedom for others, I feel it equally important to point out the flaws in their mandates. If you’re going to use the Bible to explain why someone else’s rights should be restricted, or that your adherence to a book (or claiming you do without doing so, which is how it usually works) you better be able to offer up more than “Jesus came to me at night” or “I really believe this to be true.” I don’t care.

I do agree that I’d rather have parents who take this path than others though.
