The starship will be the largest, most powerful rocket in history if it and when it becomes operational. Building rockets engines, especially ones this efficient and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with current material science is not an easy task. Rapid development and catastrophic mistakes are a big part of SpaceX’s engineering ethos.

Agree. SpaceX has been developing rapidly, changing the design of the Starship, including its Raptor engines, frequently. Incidents like this, although disappointing, aren’t that surprising. Here’s a good review:


Development of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket also had its failures, and it’s now a highly reliable launch vehicle.

I’m not a Musk fan, but SpaceX’s achievements have been remarkable.
