Coping by learning to paint on the iPad

I have no shortage of creative outlets and I hesitated on this for quite a while because out of all the creative outlets that AI can easily, quickly, and cheaply put out amazing results painting and drawing sets the standard, no shortage of apps that can instantly turn in a picture into a masterpiece water color or pencil sketch. So why bother. I have no aspirations for this beyond a hobby.

I also didn't know where to begin. I haven't drawn or painted anything for over 3 decades. Then I discovered James Julier Art Tutorials on Youtube, arguably the Bob Ross of iPad painting. All credit to the following needs to be given to him. Each is from about an hour long tutorial from start to finish (although about double that changing it to half speed to keep up with pauses and 5 second rewinds). Highly recommended if you are also interested in this. The app used is Procreate.

Let me just say the only complaint I have here is that I can only hit the love button once. These are outstanding man, excellent work and as one who has tinkered with Procreate I can speak to how complicated something like this is, and I am not nearly as talented as you are here.

Fuck AI, and I mean fuck it hard. As a photographer I plan my shots carefully, considering the time of day, day of week, etc. to get specific looks and then putting hours into post processing just have a bunch of jackwagons online say stuff like "Fake!" or "Nice AI". It's sucking the creativity out of artists and as you say people can just type in a sentence describing what they want and get a picture perfect Picasso.

Thanks. Procreate is great and works a lot like Photoshop. I’m still pretty much just doing the step by step tutorials as I become more familiar with the tools.

I find it fascinating when things seem arbitrary but when combined lead to a realism. I’d say that’s most noticeable in the window painting. If you zoom in it’s just a bunch of splotches and lines of varying opacity but zoomed out looks like a reflection and hint of what may be behind the window. It didn’t seem like that would be the result as I was doing it.

I very recently picked up a Pencil Pro for our M4 iPad Pro, I have Procreate, Autodesk Sketch, and Affinity Photo and Design all installed. Those apps with the Pencil are very cool.

The daughter is a pretty kick ass artist, I mainly doodle nonsense

If it wasn't for multiple layers of undo I would have probably quit 10 minutes into my first attempt.

The main thing that needs to be learned through experience is using different pressure with the pen. There is a setting for sensitivity but I haven't really been able to wrap my head around it and set it back to default. Also for some reason at the low end of the brush size there are increments within the size and there's a big difference between the bottom and top ends of 1% when it comes to details. Those increments don't get labeled (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc). You just have to eyeball it. Again, undo is your friend.

Here is my attempt at something, loosely based on an actual photo that I had seen at one point with my own interpretation of things. All by hand with no custom brushes of any kind, most of the work went into the boat and moon. Doesn't look like much but I spent a few hours on it with all the texturing and layers.
