That’s Farouk. He was selling a ton of San Francisco Chronicle Extra Edition newspapers at the downtown Powell & Market Street plaza the afternoon of the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. That place is always busy loaded with people and is where the cable cars turn around.
I could tell he was feeling the moment so I hit him up for some conversation and a portrait. Others coming and going through that always bustling area seemed more lively than usual with a bit more spring in their step. That day marked the end of the dreadful George Bush/Dick Cheney era, and, a new beginning for the country with its first African American United States President at the helm.
