Film nerd content on YouTube

Not sure I qualify as a film nerd. I’ve taken all of two film classes many years ago. However, if you’re interested in filmmaking techniques there’s excellent YouTube channels I watch frequently.

Cinefix and Every Scene a Painting are a couple to check out. Cinefix does a lot of lists which has sparked my interest in many a film. A couple examples below.





If anyone has similar recommendations I’d love to hear them.

I've never heard it referred to as a "oner", but I have heard it called a master shot. Same idea, I believe.

For my money perhaps the most amazing one of all time is the opening musical number that introduces "La La Land".

Now it's possible there are one or two "cheat" cuts in this, but overall from a technical and choreographic point, it's a mind-blowing achievement.

I'm guessing this was rehearsed about a gazillion times before shooting, and then the camera/dolly moves were computer-controlled.

I like dogma-style movies which are the total opposite of single shot scenes.

Don’t know what dogma-style movies are.

La-La Land is a non-starter, as I despise musicals...except for Chicago and the original Willy Wonka. No, I can’t defend that.

As for Oners, I know Goodfellas is the goto but I like Children of Men. This is the gold standard.

On with you on musicals, but for me it's all of them. I prefer the music express the feelings without talking, or people talk without music. Singing it is just not my cup of tea.

Now this one was one impressive single cut scene. Though I didn't like the movie, this one was still impressive.

Dogma is like, Dancer in the Dark, Breaking the Waves, Dogville, Melancholy.
Dogville is propably one of the more prototypical ones. FIlmed in a theater-like studio with no effort to make the environment realistic. Quite the opposite. They also feel no shame about having often multiple cuts in a scene, sometimes in the middle of a sentence. Pretentious AF, but I also find it absolutely entertaining and refreshing.

I do like Melancholy, such a great title given the plot.

And I haven’t seen the others, but am aware of Dogville and Breaking the Waves. Surely all are unconventional and I get where you’re coming from. Something is up with Lars Von Trier that I don’t like, but Nicole Kidman apparently digs his vibe.

LvT is a pretentious weirdo, but I like most of his movies because he's a real misanthrope and I find that refreshing in the sea of fake humanism. Mandarlay was for example the sequel of Dogville which was about slavery. I'm not sure I'd like it as much now as I liked it nearly 20 years ago, but it was also very provocative.

Antichrist was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. It's really gets under your skin with those slo-mo scenes, you'll just keep on dreaming with it for days:


Nymphomaniac was trash porn and had a lot of incel-y vibes. I liked the recent one, The House Jack Built, though it was made after he got into a scandal about claiming to be a nazi. The movie is about nazism (IMHO), and I can say this guy really looked deep into the abyss...
