When NASA was looking for a clear image capture system in 1969, Willard Boyle and George E. Smith parlayed a concept that earned Albert Einstein a nobel in 1921 into what became the CCD array that is in every camera we use today. Smith was truly a ground-breaker whose long life was well earned.
