Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) asked the state’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) to give him a list of everyone who had changed the gender marker on their driver’s licenses and other government documents over the last two years, The Washington Post reported.

The DPS found that 16,466 individuals had requested such a change on their various licenses and certificates between June 1, 2020 and June 30, 2022. However, the DPS told Paxton’s office that it couldn’t provide a full and accurate list of those who had submitted a court order requesting a gender change without doing additional research.

“It will be very difficult to determine which records had a valid update without a manual review of all supporting documents,” an assistant manager in DPS’s driver’s license division wrote in a July 22 email to colleagues.

For a party that preaches about personal liberties they sure want to be all up in your business.

This guy Paxton, geez. He ran for office again while under indictment by the SEC (since 2015 already) and while also facing an FBI investigation of abuse of power, and of course TX voters said sure no biggie.

Anyway isn't his request to the DMV in Texas just on the face of it another possible abuse of power?

That is insane. The government has no right to obtain such specific health information. Apparently this guy has judged parents/guardians of trans children as automatically being child abusers…

I think there is strong evidence suggesting we need to rethink how we address gender dysphoria (not to say all trans treatments should be banned). I think we need better research into the best way to educate children about these complex topics. But this conquest to target and criminalize people who identify as transgender (or rather their parents) is insane and a complete violation of civil liberties. Implying parents are committing child abuse for supporting their child’s transgender identity as best they know how and per medical advise per current medical guidelines is just absurd.

And to what end? You have two loving parents trying to do the best for their child, and what does the the state do? Send them both to jail? That’s a good way of ensuring even more psychological difficulties and trauma on-top of what trans people already face.

I can almost guarantee that next on the firing line, if it hasn’t been explored already, are any medical professionals involved with transgender healthcare. Probably starting with the surgeons, followed up by mental health clinicians providing counseling and pharmacists providing the medications.

Looking at some of what’s happening in Europe and some of the stories of transpeople domestically, there could certainly be some malpractices cases out there… we’ll have to see where those go. But that’s really for the patient and/or their guardians and the medical boards to address from the bottom up, not from the top down with the state.

There may be some Munchausen by proxy cases in the world, which is undoubtably one of the worst forms of abuse, but that’s definitely going to be the exception rather than the rule… overall, about 2:100,000 children are believed to be victims but the stats are probably not reliable- it can be hard detect, and very hard to prosecute. The reality is, most parents have no idea what to do in this situation and probably don’t wish this challenge for their children. The state has no right to investigate all parents just because they have transgender children with zero evidence of defined abuse.

What’s next? Same-sex couples raising a child in a loving home will also be considered child abuse?
