Terrifier 3. Woof. It's been a couple days and I'm undecided if I like 2 or 3 better. Didn't disappoint on the story or gore but I don't think anything topped the bedroom scene of 2. I wouldn't say 3 was a letdown, just didn't exponentially ramp up like 1 to 2. I watched an interview with the writer/director where he addressed the complaint that 2+ hours is too long for a horror movie. He didn't really disagree but said it's not the storyline or filler that adds to the time in Terrifier movies. In traditional slashers the kills maybe last a minute at most. In Terrifier movies Art's torture and kill scenes are often elaborate and comparably long. Overkill is an understatement. Art annihilates victims well beyond a kill. You watch the movies to see how he's going to take it too far.

I think I've clearly sold the franchise here. The Saw franchise might be comparable. Storyline aside, you know what you are really hoping to see.

Fathom Events (we've done a few of these) did a very limited re-release of a re-mastered original Hellraiser (ticketed through Atom). We went last Wed, it was pretty fantastic to see it on the big screen (I cannot remember if I saw it theatrically in it's original run, though I've seen dozens of times since)

It was in one of the big[ger] theaters too! So it gave things like the house, and "hell" such a massive visual scale, really fun! Should've taken a better "scale reference" photo.

They're running Goodfellas at the end of the month, we might go, it's really fun revisiting these films in the theater.

For the movie listing, dates, tickets, etc. they're also doing some kind of Potter-a-thon where they're showing the first 4 Harry Potter films (thought it was a marathon watch, but it appears to be one day after the next, so a 4-day event).

Nice. One of my favorite franchises...that went downhill quickly. Although, I remember the newest on Hulu with a female playing Pinhead was pretty good. I'll have to rewatch it. I think good call on the female lead casting as there's just no replacing Doug Bradly.

I also enjoyed the elements of the one before with the auditor having people confess their sins and then getting tortured appropriately but beyond those scenes it was a lot of camp and bad acting.

Hahaha, the wife pointed out that she has a hair color (and close enough style) where she could've tossed on an 80s suit and gone as Julia

But, yeah, everything after Hellbound (#2) starting getting a little too cornball, then it moved into like DTV level of production, Doug left at some point, bleah.

Speaking of Hellraiser II, when we got home from that Atom showing, we tossed it on! Also very good, the "world building" was fun, weird, disturbing. I was reading some trivia about it, and had never seen this about Julia's alternate ending in Hellraiser II:

Instead of her dying, she rises up out of the mattress at the end, having become the Queen of Hell, apparently the actress was sort of done and since this was originally written as a setup for the 3rd movie, we got the ending we saw, with her gone, and just the generic ~Hell Column~ coming out of the mattress.

Apparently there are a few stills of her in a black dress that was part of that ending, I didn't find anything yet, but now I'm super curious.

Interesting! I'm unaware of anything the actress did after Hellraiser. I also think it's interesting that Pinhead was supposed to be a minor character, actually not in the first movie all that much, but basically became the franchise due to fans.

Yeah, there was a short after the movie (they usually do a little 10 minute interview of some sort in these Fathom events) with Doug Bradly, and he was specifically talking about how some people were surprised at horror fan's reactions, how much they loved and wanted more Pinhead, but he kind of knew how horror franchisees work, and even though he came from classic theater, he knew they had something special.

I never saw Hellraiser. I’m not into torture horror, would this qualify? And as I’ve aged, I’m not drawn to overly dark, disturbing stories, so unless there’s more to say about it, I’d probably pass on the original and the remake.

We're not really either, this is tricky, since the premise is "Demons" that come to satisfy your desire for pain and pleasure. But that being said, it's not like Hostel or Saw, it's supernatural too, so there's sort of a disconnect from reality that's present in those previously mentioned films.

Like Friday the 13th, I wouldn't consider "torture porn", and this is in some ways, less graphic.
