Yeah, the XDR seems to be one of those Apple side projects where they do neat and interesting things in generation 1, but also gild the lily a bit too much and take a long time updating it. See also: Airpods Max.
Agreed. But an interesting difference is that while most (or perhaps all) other side projects have isolated effects (limited to the project itself), the XDR's introduction established 6k as the new max resolution Apple felt it had to support, which affected the design requirements for the external display engines in every AS chip—even the base M1 supports 6k@60Hz. So I'd say it was a side project in one sense, but central in another.
