DirecTV, which is owned by AT&T Inc. and TPGvia a joint venture, has offered OAN to customers since April 2017 after Herring Networks won a lawsuit that forced the satellite-TV provider to carry the channels.

I wonder why they’re able to drop them now?

Nevertheless, this is the second good piece of news I’ve seen lately. My own cable company has removed Newsmax from its lineup.

I’m sure there are people who will continue to view these networks via streaming. But in the end we can hope this operation withers and dies. We don’t need three propaganda networks. One Fox “News” is one too many.

Once that got exposed, they kicked it to the curb. Not a good look for your company to create a right-wing propaganda network that foments anti-government violence.

The reaction has begun.

Former President Trump, speaking at a rally in Florence, Arizona, said OAN was targeted because of politics and urged his supporters to think twice about using AT&T’s services. “Maybe what we should do is not use AT&T,” he said.

You know. Because OAN and Trump stand strong against cancel culture.

On Twitter, some conservatives expressed outrage that DirecTV and AT&T planned to drop OAN. “Corporate Media is crushing what little dissent remains,” tweeted former Fox Business Network host Lou Dobbs.

“They told us they wanted a conservative network,” the elder Herring said during a 2019 deposition. “They only had one, which was Fox News, and they had seven others on the other [leftwing] side. When they said that, I jumped to it and built one.”

Really? Seven others? What are they?

No matter. The best news is this:

Court testimony also showed that OAN receives nearly all of its revenue from DirecTV.

During a 2020 court proceeding, a transcript shows, an OAN lawyer told the court, “If Herring Networks, for instance, was to lose or not be renewed on DirecTV, the company would go out of business tomorrow.”

Thank you, Jesus.

However before breaking out the fireworks, let’s remember two things. There’s always the possibility that someone will step in to keep it going on streaming, a la Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze. And really, as odious as it is, OAN doesn’t hold a candle to the amount of poisonous bilge that Tucker Carlson issues on a nightly basis.

The cancer has gotten a little smaller, but it remains.

US Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) also called on DirecTV to keep OAN, saying "the lack of transparency with the viewers of OAN in Montana in your decision-making process is unacceptable and has the appearance of targeting supporters of former President Donald Trump."​

When asked whether it will keep Newsmax, DirecTV told Ars, "As we do for every network in our lineup, we'll evaluate and make decisions as we approach each contract's expiration." The DirecTV spokesperson also said, "I'm not at liberty to provide the expiration date of the contract [with Newsmax]."​

Probably not going to happen, but it yet might.

Verizon announced on Thursday that One America News will be removed from its channel lineup on July 31, leaving the far-right network with almost no TV providers.

You can still watch it in some parts of Alaska though.

Currently, the only cable provider in the U.S. still offering OAN is Alaska-based General Communications Inc. Unfortunately for the network, GCI is only available in a little over 100,000 households and is looking to completely ditch cable for streaming. Beyond that, OAN is available on little-known digital platforms Vifgo and KlowdTV.

The problem is, anything that’s factual and not based in an alternate-reality is deemed “left wing”.

Any conservative network, by its very nature, will be a bullshit network spreading lies and deceit.

How do you “fairly” cover a corrupt president? If they say “Trump is lying when he says the election was stolen from him”, that will automatically be classified as “left leaning”, when it’s just the truth. Any other “reporting” that tries to lend any credibility to that claim without facts or evidence is pure misinformation.

There are policy debates where networks can validly “lean” in one direction or the other, but the right has crossed into a realm where facts, logic and truth is meaningless.

It’s kind of amazing a network like OAN existed in the first place, it’s the same type of crap you see in Russia and North Korea. And it emboldens those nations, because what’s the point in America chiding those countries for their laughable propaganda when they can just play clips of Fox, OAN and Newsmax and say “Look at how America indoctrinates it’s citizens with lies and misinformation with the full support of the Republican Party and it’s 45th “president”?

The Republican Party has - for decades - been a party with fewer overall supporters than democrats, and even less-popular positions. This is a progressive country, always has been, even in its darkest days. The conservatives have always been on the wrong side of history, overall. The news reflects that. That doesn’t mean it is in itself “left-leaning”. But it almost has to be these days, by default, to promote truth. It’s not “news” in the traditional sense to say the 2020 elections were stolen. It’s not “news” to pretend black and brown people are not targeted more than their white peers for various things - be it hatred, trigger-happy police, wrongful convictions, etc.

There may be some institutional issues - like what stories get reported, which get omitted and how to fit a narrative - but again, I think that’s a byproduct of a conscious effort to combat perceived ills of the other side and to prevent giving credence to the other side of the debate. For instance, if Fox News only promotes stories on black people or undocumented citizens who commit crimes, another network may intentionally point out when a victim is black and a perpetrator white to combat the narrative that only black and brown people are criminals. It’s a necessary evil.

It’s a vicious cycle, and while no side is totally innocent, one side clearly is much, much worse. But that’s a common thing these days - one side is clearly worse than the other, in almost every aspect. And it’s not the left.
