In the middle of a service delivery on Zoom this afternoon, my headset cut out. Ok, not a big problem. Turned it off and carried on with system settings. However, I just finished a FaceTime call with my mother, and the keyboard would not raise or lower the volume. I just get this funky popup.

Anyone know what it means or how to get rid of it?

Does the mute button (F10) work?

Also, you may want to try:

- plugging in headphones, and seeing if the keys work to adjust headphone volume
- if so, then remove headphones and try keys again
- try rebooting. You never know…
- try a NVRAM reset. Instructions for doing that vary, I think by the model of your mac. On some macs you may want to try a PRAM reset and/or an SMC reset.

I've seen this before when using an external sound output device that didn't support volume adjustment. I suspect in your case, the computer's drivers got confused and a reboot will fix it.

Just tried that. It didn’t work either. I was sure it would.

Hmm. Can you try making a new user account, logging out of your current one, and logging in to the new one? If it works there, it's a corrupted prefs file in your current user account.

Got it! Somehow the audio on my 2nd monitor has switched itself on and made itself primary. Switched it off, and all is working perfectly again.
