TL;DR. The traditional metrics used to define the economy mostly just say how the wealthy are doing. When you include other data that is often ignored or miscategorized the reality is a lot more bleak and has been for decades.

A "good" economy means that the richest are getting richer, which, for the past 45 years, means the wealth gap is widening. That is not actually good for anyone, not even the really wealthy. But, big numbers are neat to look at.

One of the biggest US myths that never gets mentioned is the thriving middle class. In our entire history that has only happened for about 2 decades after WWII. Before and after that it's been a fight and struggle to maintain that position, or the illusion of that is probably more accurate.
