There were tears shed in my family when we heard the news. I was lucky enough to see him in concert at three very different stages of his career — when he was mostly down but not completely out, playing at the Santa Clara County fairgrounds; on the first Highwayman tour, which was stellar; and on a glorious night in Reno long after he had lost his voice but still had all of his charisma.

"Third World Warrior" remains one of my all-time favorite albums of politically charged — and righteous — music.
