My question, interpreting "paying for life" in terms of the adobe subscription model, how well does the PS skill set translate over to, say, the GIMP?

I couldn't tell you much about GIMP. Tried it briefly, and it looked like it was trying to be similar to Photoshop, but it seemed more crude (as one often sees with open source software). I would say download it and try it. It'll cost you nothing.

Knock ā€˜em dead. Some people (like me) really enjoy public presentation.

I used to publically speak a decent amount, especially when I was sort of the "tech evangelist" at a couple of gigs. Usually it wasn't with much preparation, as I tended to fall into things head first :D

"Can you do 30 minutes on <some_technical_topic> ?"

"Sure."
