Tim Sweeney Says “Find My” Is Evil

Yeah I saw this! Even the denizens of MR were uniformly unimpressed and uniting that fractious group is an accomplishment. I mean whooo.

My two favorites so far:

I thought the saying is "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs"...

Of course there is one example where is actually lead to (most likely) at least one death, when a Russian soldier "looted" an Apple device and the Ukrainian owner gave the information to the Ukrainian forces to located said soldier's unit.
And that was very practical use of that feature, but also just a little bit evil.

I don't fully disagree with him. Recovery of a stolen device should indeed be mediated by law enforcement, not done in a vigilante fashion. But that's not really the fault of Find My - If people take that sort of thing into their own hands, they are the problem, not Find My.
Nah that’s giving him too much credit. Find My helps you alert law enforcement where the stolen item is. So his statements on vigilantism is just a straw man meant to back justify his inane take that Find My is creepy. He even tried to bring reselling into it when you turn that off when reselling a device! He’s a corporate CEO trying to cosplay at Robin Hood but is so out of touch he doesn’t actually know what people’s concerns are. As others have said he left a stolen device connected to his iCloud for years? I mean it makes no sense.

So it’s performative, nothing more. He thought he could get some interwebs accolades and just stepped on a rake instead and tried to create random justifications for his original stupidity. And accusing others of being creepy when his company violates the privacy of children and enticing them to spend money is just icing on the hypocrisy cake. Especially when the service in question, Find My, is undeniably not creepy and actually quite useful, hell just for lost items never mind stolen. And Find My is part of activation lock which makes devices less of a target for thieves when they can’t use it!

Fair play. Agreed

If you think that killing Russian invaders (murderers, rapists, looters) inside Ukraine is evil, your moral compass is wildly in need of adjustment.

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek. Maybe I should have used sarcasm tags.
While the death penalty for theft is very harsh, invading soldiers shouldn't be surprised when the get shot at.

I'm definitely not a supporter of the Russian invasion of Ukraine (or any other country for that matter), and hope that Ukraine will get all the support they need to push the Russians back to where they belong (which, according to some of their behavior seems to be the Dark Ages).
