Hoping this is a good decision with what's currently out there, I just didn't want to spend the extra for the M3 Ultra so this is what I ended up with:
  • Apple M4 Max chip with 16‑core CPU, 40‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine
  • 128GB unified memory
  • 1TB SSD storage
  • Front: Two USB-C ports, SDXC card slot
  • Back: Four Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB‑A ports, HDMI port, 10Gb Ethernet port, headphone jack
My current M1 has 32 MB RAM and 512 GB and it's not able to handle all the video editing I am doing, regularly forcing me to close other apps and delete files/apps because of space restrictions.

Sound good to you guys?

Have the m4 max 16/40 in my macbook pro.

its a beast!

All I know is my current M1 cannot handle some of the intensive video editing that I need to do anymore. I have to close everything else out or I get memory errors and it's frustrating. The biggest offender as it turns out is Google Chrome, had no idea how much of a memory hog it is.

Ordered on Friday, July 11 and it's scheduled to be delivered on July 29th. These guys are no Amazon that's for sure. :ROFLMAO:

How much storage did you buy? I am curious. BTW, I am sorry about the drone saga, it sucks that DJI cannot do business anymore in the US.

Have you been following my YT channel? Yeah man it's been brutal but this is Trump's America now and he's just fucking everyone in it.

To be honest, not your YT channel. I follow you on Instagram and watched part 1 of the saga on YT. I haven't had time to go back. I am impressed with your work and jealous of your skill! As a fellow IT guy, I of course, love everything techie. I have an older DJI drone, but haven't taken it out in a while since they put the flying restrictions zones in the app. Boston has a lot!

Ahh I see, yeah fair enough. I've given up on getting the drone back at this point and purchased a second one out of South Korea which arrived in 3 days with no issues. In the end I'll just have two of them with one as a backup so I think it'll work out okay.

SF also has a lot of restricted zones but once you learn exactly where they're at you can work around them and sometimes even fly over some of them as long as you take off and land outside of said zones.

My M1 Ultra is still chugging along, though my video editing needs aren't nearly as intensive as yours. Looking forward to hear how the new Mac does when you get it. (I almost never use Chrome, BTW.)

Mine arrived early and the time machine backup/restore was a piece of cake, works really well with very few hiccups to deal with. So far I can say you're right, short of editing processor crunching footage you would hardly know the difference between the M1 and M4, it's definitely snappier all around but hardly with the upgrade if you don't need the additional processing power.

Looking forward to not wanting to throw it through the window with memory and storage crashes anymore. (y)

Coming to this a bit late...... Yep, the specs sound good to me -- you've ordered yourself a real speed demon! Ahhhhh..... 128 GB RAM!!!! (Just a wee bit jealous here!) That should indeed make a huge difference in your processing of drone output, videos and such. Enjoy! :)

If you do think of tossing it through a window, let me know. I can give it a good home. Seriously, I hope it works well for you.

After working with it for a few days I had higher hopes, rendering, encoding, etc. all still takes just as long. The biggest difference is it's not crashing out so there's at least that. TBH I expected better performance out of a 3 generation leap.

Sorry you're not seeing much better performance. I'll leave it to the people who are more knowledgeable to say why that's so. However, it makes me feel better about keeping my M1 Ultra.

My impression is that anything using the SOC's specialty hardware for accelerating de/encoding won't see a ton of difference between the M1 and M4. But CPU (and GPU) heavy tasks definitely should, including rendering (and software encoding/decoding rather than hardware). So that's unfortunate that @Eric isn't seeing better results there.
