I think at some point we went from wanting somebody in office you could sit down and have a beer with to wanting somebody you could wingman in a bar fight over harassing women, or at least that seems to be the gold standard for one party.

What's amazing is that it can take something as awful as a Trump-backed candidate having lost a child custody battle to embolden GOP primary race opposition these days.

Yeah. It's so shortsighted. In a way it reminds me of companies that choose to ignore unsustainable aspects of their business because in the short run it's still profitable, and in the long run, hey, that's somebody else's problem.

Like with the cultivation and harvesting of tea... where workers first in Asia and South Asia were struggling even 60 years ago with low wages and terrible working conditions, and now the same still goes on in the African tea growing countries, where for instance Unilever has finally decided the way to solve the problem is, um.... just sell off that segment of their business and be done with it.

Heh, but they waited so long... and there are finally a lot more potential stakeholders now among large investors who have concerns about ESG (environmental, social, governance) issues. Even private equity buyers realize they're not going to be able to solve "the labor problem" of tea growing in a way that guarantees material profit margin hikes every quarter going forward. New rules and concerns extend past company policy into choices made by the consumer and the investor, and violations are not so easily winked at in the boardrooms any more.

But I doubt many people in the Republican Party today would figure there's a lesson in there for how to do US politics in the wake of how Donald Trump trashed that party's ability to focus on a future without him and his authoritarian followers. They've completely degenerated into focus on "so much winning" -- even as winning through playing by the rules has got so hard for their shrinking demographics that they're trying to write unconstitutional laws to work around the problem.
