President Donald Trump on Friday demanded Apple make its iPhones in the United States or face a 25% tariff.

“I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else,” Trump posted Friday morning on Truth Social. “If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S.”

Trump last week during his Middle East trip said he was displeased with Cook, Apple’s CEO, over the company’s plan to manufacture iPhones set to be sold in the United States at newly built plants in India.

He's never going to understand the symbiotic relationship between Apple's suppliers and Foxconn manufacturing the phones....and how the location is ideal as they're all in the same place.

Nor will be ever acknowledge that workers in the US would be unwilling to go through 2-4 years of training to be qualified to assemble iPhones - and only make minimum wage to keep the pricing reasonable.

Unless you can get to the entire production being automated, it's not going to happen (and then, it's not going to produce very many jobs) - and the costs will still be considerably higher than their competitors.

Trump doesn't have the capacity to understand anything of depth greater than a stick figure drawn in crayon.

Edit: Oh - and I wouldn't blame China for slapping 100% tariffs on all components shipping from China to India to level the playing field.

Who in US will go to work on a production line?! As others said, just wait : tomorrow he can change his mind , or T.Cook can stall or even
better move the whole production to Canada 😂 , good $ exchange

P.s. Where is all Rump merchandise made? In US or China?

I think we're living in a reality that for the next 4 years we'll have to pay exorbitant prices for goods and services, we either need to accept it and pay or hold out but there's little to nothing we can do to stop it. I think our best hope is some sort of change in the midterms but even if they flipped both houses you could not stop the unprecedented amount of executive orders and tariffs.

listened to a podcast and the guy was talking about how Apple created the China it is today. way over a million employees would be needed for apple to move here.

It's not just the infrastructure, their labor force is also far more skilled and disciplined. Can you imagine Cletus and his rat pack MAGA militia doing work like this?

The only things that will stop Trump are general strikes (which are VERY different from mere protests) and military insubordination.

Democrats winning the midterms is meaningless. Trump will simply ignore any attempt at meaningful oversight.

Suffering hasn’t kicked in yet. Wait until the fall when parents need to buy their kids christmas presents, people need to buy new phones, and their kids can’t get flu or covid shots so everyone gets sick again.

So, the 25% tax will be imposed on all imported phones, not just Apple’s.

Will be devastating to see the fallout of this action (among others) to the US’ economy.

I don’t think there’s a single phone being manufactured in US at the moment.

It’s sort of a silly thing. What does it mean to “manufacture” a phone in the U.S.? Putting the parts together? Making the parts? Which parts do you have to put together? The way it works now is chips are made over here, then packaged over there, then boards are made over in this other place, then the chips are placed on the boards in another place, then the glass is made someplace else, the frame made in over in this other place, etc. etc. Maybe Tim should have the whole thing assembled except for the cover glass, have it shipped to the U.S., and have the cover glass put on here. “Manufactured in the U.S.” Check.

4 yrs? I think this will be felt the rest of my life

This will be solved by bribes. And since Trump isn’t hiding the fact that he’s evil and corrupt, Apple could literally write him a personal check for a billion dollars, why fuck around? Trump could hold up a giant version of it at a press conference, like a Powerball award.

Or Apple could release a limited edition iPhone Trump Edition in a shiny fake gold color and a Siri voice that sounds like him: “That’s a stupid question. You’re fired!”

One thing is for sure, there are a whole bunch of people that never cared about who they voted for or abstained that are thinking twice now.

I'm afraid things will have to get even worse for them – much worse – before it affects who they vote for.

My hope is for those who abstained to start caring and actually jump in, apathy still played a huge role in the last election.

Yeah, the abstainers are probably more movable than the Trump voters. But I think many people just concentrate on the top of the ticket. Votes for the Senate, House, state legislatures and other state and local officers are also important. Trump has done incalculable damage through executive actions, but a Democrat/Independent majority in Congress could curb that.
