Apple launches AirTag 2

Just in time to stash a couple in my luggage on an upcoming trip.
I combine them with the satechi luggage tags (which are nice because you charge them with magsafe/qi, but they do lack the airtag’s precision finding). I’m a belt and suspenders kind of guy.

the speaker would be nice. what I want is faster notifications if I forgot something with one. Walking is about 1/4 mile or more before it goes off. on my bike its about a mile. I know its time but that's how I can measure it.

I’d also like to be able to designate my car as a “no need to warn me i forgot it” zone. I leave my sunglasses in the car with a satechi “find my” sunglasses case all the time, and it’s constantly reminding me I left them behind.

or a time. my bike bag has one so I don't forget to bring the groceries home. but when I go for a walk it goes off. I only need it after say 3pm.

Good point. My computer bag, computer, etc. are marked “safe” at my home or my office, because if I leave work to go to lunch I don’t want an alert. But I really do want an alert if I leave that stuff in the office at the end of the day when I go home.

The extended range might make it more useful for those finding their car in mall parking lots. (for those that have AirTagged their car) :) Being able to use your watch for this feature means everyone around you won't necessarily know that you've misplaced your car. :D

Oh...and a FindMy story. I bought a bunch of KeySmart cards to track my wife's purses. She loaned one to her daughter. Didn't think anything of it. The purse/card stayed at the daughter's apartment. Kept meaning to mention it to her...but figured we'd get it back when she returned the purse. (the daughter is 26).

Well, the "purse" suddenly shows as being down at our local recycling depot the other day. I'm like "What?! She lost the purse?! Or did she throw away the card? Nah...she would have asked her Mom before doing that". I asked her about it. She had no idea what I was talking to her about. Fished one of the cards out of another purse. "Oh....yep." She winced. I had dumped that out when cleaning out the purse....then later, I was cleaning out some stuff - thought that was one of my ex's things, so I threw it away. Sorry"

Told her it was fine. Also reminded her that electronics are supposed to be recycled, not thrown in the landfill.

Next thing I know, the card is in a train yard in Seattle. From there, it made its way to a landfill in Arlington, Oregon. It seems that's its final resting place. :D

I had no idea that Metro Vancouver has a contract with a landfill in Oregon to take our waste. :D

I'm using a few of those big battery cases from Elevation Lab for AirTags, they last for 1 million years and make it more weatherproof. We put them into the interior zipper linings in suitcases, etc., they just stay there, never need battery replacement (well, eventually, they use 2 AA vs. the CR2032), and yes, you can still hear them just fine (though this is more about general location).

Oh, they have some new designs!

Those look interesting. And Amazon has them. I can see using them in my various camera bags. Is there anything you don't like about them?

No obvious new features, but louder speaker and longer range.

There had been rumors it would be harder to disable the speaker, but these aren’t confirmed yet.
Not going to change the ones I have because “I can change the batteries” LOL, referred to some people
but a longer range would be good if I can disable the speaker , a must for me

Nice story though 🙂

There's not, they're great! I mean they're much bigger vs. an AirTag alone (though they have new smaller models now) and people say they mute the audio a bit, but that's not an issue for me.

I scored them direct with a coupon so I got a two-pack for like $25.

Thanx... Yesterday I bit the bullet and bought the smaller one that uses two AAA batteries for five years of use. Just got an Amazon email that I can now pick it up at the local locker. I suspect I'll buy a couple more after I set it up and like it.

I received my Elevation Lab AirTag holders today and put one together. Easy peasy, took about a minute or so.

The sound is reduced by quite a bit - I'm guessing by around a half. If I decide to keep them, I may use my drill press to add some holes to the black cover. For my use they don't have to be waterproof. I am going to get a set of the Gen 2 AirTags when they show up at the local Apple Store - that will help a little.
