Is this a problem?

No. Sounds like it is only related to Google coming on Apple devices as the default search engine. Nothing would stop any user from making Google the default just as you have made DDG as your default.

to be clear, what would likely happen is that Google couldn’t PAY apple to be the default search engine.

What Apple does with that, who knows. They could accept money from Bing, make Google the default without payment, pick some other third party who is willing to pay, pick a third party for free, force the user to choose a search engine on setup, or produce their own search engine.

I think it most likely they would accept money from Bing, but who knows.

How is it used? I just make google my homepage/app on all my devices.

Under Settings on an iPhone go to Safari>Search Engine and pick which one you want. I don’t have a home page on Safari really.

I quite enjoy that DDG doesn’t stick an annoying bit of LLM slop as the first result.

IIUC, DuckDuckGo is an aggregator, which relies on several engines for its content, elgoog being one of them. Its main advantage being it is not a puppy that follows you around getting underfoot.
