Interesting that Apple claims that their employee, Ethan Lipnik, was kept in the dark about the reason for his firing and that he later learned what had happened from others. Seems odd that the company could just fire him without saying anything more.

I also wonder in what way(s) Lipnik is alleged to have not properly secured his iPhone. Was it just being careless about letting Ramacciotti watch when he entered his passcode or something else? I try to be careful when I'm entering my passcode, and I'd think anyone with a development device from Apple would know to be similarly cautious.

It's more how things work in the US all-up for rank-and-file. In 49 states, you can be fired for any reason or no reason at all. There are some protected classes where you can't fire them for that reason, but corporate policy is basically to say nothing unless they feel like they need to get out in front of an unlawful termination claim. So even proving that the firing was for a reason that the law prohibits is tough. And Silicon Valley has been very anti-union, so there's not much in the way of contracts. Someone like Chris Lattner should be able to get one, but I'd have an uphill battle without a union for the collective bargaining.

It depends on the details. Having done a couple things under tight scrutiny with Apple in the past, there are a lot of rules around how these sorts of devices are handled. Not just in passcode policy, but physical security policy. Who can have access to locations where devices are stored, how is access managed/audited, etc. I suspect that Apple is more talking about this. i.e. Ramacciotti shouldn't have ever been able to gain physical access to the test device in the first place.
