last year's TurboTax file vanished. I know it was there after I finished because I saved it and opened it afterward. but someone on my old Mac, I guess, also got deleted from the time machine. all my old ones are there but that one nope. I guess somehow my last mac deleted it but no clue how it f=vanished from time machine.

I do not trust automated systems to protect my important files. I make manual copies of stuff I want to keep.

I am pretty good at backing stuff up. usually, I copy them to Dropbox.

I've never used them, but there are utilities like Disk Drill that can recover deleted files that haven't yet been overwritten with newer data.

it was on my last iMac that's gone, so a little late. plus, I did not find out till like almost a year later.

Same, especially for passwords. I still use the encrypted apps but put the most important ones in a secure note within the app.
