GM really doesn’t get it

Man, I never use nav. It just seems wrong. I would rather just comprehend where I am, using the big lump of bacon in my head.

We had neighbors that probably couldn’t have gotten to the store without it.

My wife went with her and another neighbor to see Wicked in Dayton. And they had gone to dinner on the same road as the hotel. Her and the other neighbor had some wine so they had my wife drive back home.

Well the one who relied on Nav wanted to put it in so they could get back to the hotel and she was puzzled as to why my wife didn’t need it. 😂

I guess I am just a fading luddite.
I commute at least an hour a day. I use an app to determine if my current route is still the fastest one…

One you trust? The issue I have, with Waze for example, is it will often try to take me off the freeway for a couple of off-ramps and often times with lights and all it's still slower than just staying in traffic. I'll typically ignore its suggestions as a result.

After all this time there is no way to tell the routing not to bother unless you save more than X amount of time? That is kind of crazy.

While I understand what you are saying, there was one time we were on 90 in Gary, headed west, and I decided to get off the freeway, onto 12, because I had had some experience with Chicago freeways. We trudged through town, eventually up Lakeshore Drive and cut back over to the freeway at Gurney, well north of the metro area. The trip took around 90 minutes, but, at that time of day (the time between 5am and 10pm), it would have taken about 90 minutes on the freeway. The big difference being that, on the freeway, you sit there yelling "why are we sitting here???" whereas no not-the-freeway, you can see why you are stopped and have a pretty decent idea of when you will not be stopped.

Also, the freeways through Chicago have tolls, while US12 through the city does not. Of course, the other major difference is that the freeways have overpass-plazas where you can conveniently stop to deal with fluid pressures, whereas, in the city, it takes a bit more effort to find a practical place for that.

Within reason. I’ll use it to gage if I should follow the directions or not.

Except, I feel bad when I ignore the google lady. If I feel my route will be better, I can almost hear the sigh while she repaints the route. I am waiting for the day where she just gives up and says, "since you seem to know better, why don't you paint the blue line?"

I use nav in two situations:
  1. Traveling in a new or unfamiliar area, especially at night
  2. When I need updated arrival times based on conditions
I used to manage back in the day when all we had were paper maps, but I sometimes wonder how I did it when I was alone. I vividly recall driving with a map folded against the steering wheel, looking down when I had to. Having someone with me to tell me which way to go was helpful, although it got frustrating when their navigation skills were sub par.

Don't forget on folding in a way so all you had to do was flip it, when you went off the map. Also how were your refolding skills, to put it back in the glove compartment?

i generally use apple maps these days.

it works well enough in my area, integrates with the watch and unlike waze, also integrates with the dash on my rav4 (i.e. the route appears in the navigation display on the rav4 dash, which means i can use the carplay screen for other things).

I’m another person who uses maps for anything more than a 5 minute drive - for speed camera alerts, traffic guidance, etc. I also use it to share ETA with someone if i am picking them up.

Whatever happened to the potential of getting celebrity voice "skins" for your artificial assistant? There was a spoof about that....no doubt Morgan Freeman would be one of the most popular.

I think it would add a wee bit of fun to the drive if the device got mad at you if you missed a turn. :)

I wouldn't mind getting chewed out by Samuel L Jackson... "How could you have missed such an easy mother fuckin' turn!? Turn your bitch ass around and try again mother fucker!"

So how do you guys feel about CarPlay Ultra?
Only available for the Aston Martin? I'll have to pick one up after my trip to Safeway later and will let you know my thoughts.

Looks cool, but not sure I need it. I guess long-term it will be interesting to see how it evolves.

Looks like BMW isn’t on the list to support it (https://9to5mac.com/2025/05/15/carplay-ultra-automakers/), so maybe I’ll have to switch to Porsche to try it out after my BMW lease (assuming my BMW lease actually happens. In about 2 weeks the order should finally go in).

About CarPlay, which I like, my RAV4 Hybrid is at the dealer for a notorious high voltage cable issue that is luckily covered by warranty. That car is wired CarPlay only like our Outback.

So I have a 2024 Tacoma as a loaner (weird choice by them) with wireless CarPlay. It sucks due to audio lag. A web search tells me it’s a common issue. I prefer wired based on this. Hopefully it’s still an option when we get our next vehicle but I’m not optimistic.

I’m having the exact same issue with my wireless CarPlay. I’ve actually always loved it, but it’s constantly hijacking the phone audio with Bluetooth and then I have to go back to the media, find my favorites go back to the station I was listening to before it was hijacked.

It’s to the point that I shut CarPlay off entirely, technically you shouldn’t need your phone for other things since you already have CarPlay but the reality is I still check my phone in the car for other things
