GM really doesn’t get it

I’m having the exact same issue with my wireless CarPlay. I’ve actually always loved it, but it’s constantly hijacking the phone audio with Bluetooth and then I have to go back to the media, find my favorites go back to the station I was listening to before it was hijacked.

It’s to the point that I shut CarPlay off entirely, technically you shouldn’t need your phone for other things since you already have CarPlay but the reality is I still check my phone in the car for other things
This doesn't read like a glowing CarPlay endorsement. 😢

I think it's more about the "wireless" aspect of it than anything, it seems to use it as a blanket anytime audio is sent to any part of the phone to export it through the car, which tries to interpret it through its various apps, thus hijacking whatever is currently playing on your radio and exiting the default app. This was never an issue when you plugged in directly.

About CarPlay, which I like, my RAV4 Hybrid is at the dealer for a notorious high voltage cable issue that is luckily covered by warranty. That car is wired CarPlay only like our Outback.

So I have a 2024 Tacoma as a loaner (weird choice by them) with wireless CarPlay. It sucks due to audio lag. A web search tells me it’s a common issue. I prefer wired based on this. Hopefully it’s still an option when we get our next vehicle but I’m not optimistic.

I bought one of these to have wireless CarPlay in the Rav4: U2AirPro

Also have a wireless charger sitting in that cubby where the lighter/USB ports are.

It takes about a minute to boot up but (with the exception of one or two beta builds) it's been really reliable. :)

Only annoying thing is that it connects to the last phone by default - so if the wife was driving the Rav4 last and we're both in there, it connects to her phone. :( But, otherwise, has no issues connecting.

How about lag?

Where are you experiencing lag? Using the phone (voice)? I really haven't noticed a lag when using it for hands free in the car - I'll do a test with the wife in the parking lot to see if we can notice any lag when I have a visual on her - but that'll be next week - she's on a girls trip to Toronto until Tuesday. :)

An example is pressing play on the screen and the music takes a couple of seconds to start whereas a wired connection is instantaneous. This lag is with all apps. At work, I take my lunch in the car often (I've gotta get out of the building or I go coo-coo) and if I watch any video at all on my phone the lag is intolerable. The workaround is switching to straight Bluetooth (turning off CarPlay) and video/audio are perfectly in sync. The issue is definitely with wireless CarPlay.

Yep - definitely see where you're coming from. Absolutely no excuse for them having that - it uses Wifi for wireless CarPlay - there really shouldn't be any lag. :(

I'm sure thousands have, but I'll report that as a bug, just the same so they add another tick on the Wish List tally.

Today a guy came into the dealership complaining he couldn't get Carplay to work with his new Bronco Sport. So one of the sales guys went out to help him. Seems he was trying to use a 3rd party Carplay app on his Android and it wouldn't work over BT.

He didn't want to use Android Auto. SMDH.

I think we all get married to our preferred platform, I was that way with CarPlay but now that it's wireless only in my new car I've given up on it. To be fair though the infotainment system on the BMW is worlds better than the Tesla so it's not really needed.
