“The first Apple modem will also only support four-carrier aggregation, a technology that combines bands from several wireless providers simultaneously to increase network capacity and speeds. Modems from Qualcomm can support six or more carriers at the same time.”

That is not at all what carrier aggregation is, dummy. A “carrier” isn’t a provider. It’s a signal at a specific frequency which is than modulated to transmit data.

Then what is actually being described here? Did Gurman mean to say that Apple's modem enables the phone to be used with four different providers, or that it's doing carrier aggregation with four component carriers (frequencies)?

Also, in fairness, while "carrier aggregation" may refer only to frequencies, the term "carrier" itself is frequently used as a term of art to indicate a provider, since it's shorthand for "common carrier".

Note its frequent use here:

The term "carrier" is also used extensively to indicate telecom providers in the Communications Act of 1934 and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Screenshot from 1996 Act:

Yes, carrier can mean provider. But not when it is combined with the word “aggregation.”

Gurman thinks carrier aggregation allows you to receive signals from multiple provider’s simultaneously. It does not. It is an engineering term, not a legal one. It refers to aggregating signals from multiple signal bands (from one provider).

Yeah ... not sure why Gurman thinks folks will have more than one mobile network subscription to even make use of "aggregating" services from multiple service provider/carriers.

Let alone SIX different providers!

I'm not the first one to say it but Gurman just isn't very good whenever he tries to play a pundit. I don't know how one could get that level of access and be so bad at it since you'd think by now he would've learnt some business sense just by listening to his sources over the years. To be fair Walter Isaacson also showed himself to be a complete hack whenever he tried to synthesize his opinion on business and he famously had access to the innermost sources.
