It bums me out to know that dogs understand a foreign language that I don't.

Did they have a LEO background, or were the dogs being trained to be guard dogs? LEO trains their dogs with German commands so that criminals cannot counter a command if they don't understand it.

No he was a chemical engineer for Bayer (now Covestro), and did 2 stints in Germany. They got one of their dogs over there and it knew German, so they continued it with new dogs.
