Had to go see who was behind the approval. The fact that it was the germans makes me feel a little more comfortable that this is actually backed by real analysis.

I don't know :D If that's a governmental organization, I don't have much faith.

As a German I'd have to say that without checking who exactly approved it, I'd still be careful.
For example, I once thought that the BSI (Federal Bureau for Secruity in Information Technology) were "the good guys", until they approved an ID card reader without keyboard as safe. Why did they do it? Because the readers with keyboard weren't ready yet and the government really wanted to push the electronic ID cards.

iPhone/iPad are now approved for use in handling NATO classified info without any special additional software or hardware.

Seems impressive.
Remember when having your own email servers was so taboo?

Wir sollen Deutsch schreiben! Ich brauche Übung. Meine Kollegen in Düsseldorf lachen mich aus.

Off-Topic:

When folk use the term classified, do they mean Secret, or just Unclassified (which is technically a classification)? I am having the hardest time finding out which is meant. I suppose I could ask our security officer tomorrow, assuming I remember.

I can’t use my iPhone or iPad to access my hospital’s email or other resources without mobile device management software. This seemed odd, so I did a bit of digging.

The announcement from NATO says that more than stock devices are needed to access information up to the RESTRICTED level. Although I don’t know what that security level actually includes, it does mean that Apple’s INDIGO configuration and MDM are needed.

Just to piggyback off of @Roller NATO restricted is the lowest classification level for NATO but is still a classified level. It actually seems maybe a touch weaker than SECRET as the level of the material is equivalent to “Official Use Only” with a more formal designation to only send and use on classified systems. More similar to CONFIDENTIAL.

Obviously highly classified material for which you need a SCIF you can’t take an iPhone into in the first place (or an Apple Watch). Of course if it’s a fake SCIF created from pipes and draping in a members only club from which you are merely directing a war, all bets are off.
