General Just when you thought it was safe…

I think the worst part of this is that the resurgence is partly due to the supply chain disruptions from COVID allowing the "barrier" created by terrain in Panama and sterile flies we introduced to be breached, letting them move up through Central America. We have the ability to push it back again, but the question is: does the current federal government care enough to get things done on the international level that are required to accomplish the goal?

EDIT: I do want to point out that we are doing work here. I'm just not sure there won't be some random nonsense that gets in the way of the experts trying to do their jobs.

As a result, North and Central America successfully eradicated NWS until 2023, when the flies suddenly overpowered the insect barrier and the difficult terrain of the Darien Gap at the southern tip of Panama. The exact cause of this breach is unclear but is most likely due to multiple factors, including interruptions in sterile fly production due to the COVID-19 pandemic and illegal cattle imports, as well as the challenges involved in surveillance of the gap’s difficult geography.
