According to German and some other sources, the new iPhone SE is coming this week. To me, the interesting bit is that it will have Apple’s own modem for the first time. The inevitable evolution of that is pretty exciting to me.

First, the wife will be happy. She has had both previous generations of the SE and currently has a 13 Mini.

And maybe with the new modem it will actually ring. I can call it from the same room and it won't ring sometimes.

I share the excitement for the new modem. How will it perform? Will be better or worse than the Qualcomm one it replaces? I also look forward to the WiFi/bt chip coming later this year for similar reasons. Those two along with the M5 gpu are my most anticipated tech arrivals this year.

Something which interests me (though I doubt I'll get an answer) is why it's taken over 5 years to get a product out of the acquisition of Intel's cellular modem division. Did they decide that whatever Intel had been doing pre-acquisition wasn't going to be good enough, and restart?

Just a guess... Perhaps it's due to the difficulty navigating around Qualcomm's patents - assuming that was their intention, rather than licensing? It'll be interesting to see how it all works out. I've always assumed it was likely not possible to step on Qualcomm's 200,000+ active patents, considering their breadth and history in modern digital communications signal processing.

They are apparently licensing Qualcomm's patents.
