A man was arrested for identity theft, spent 14 months in jail and three and a half months in the funny farm, because the person who stole and had been using his identity for years had authorities convinced that he was that guy.

It looks like the thief had used the stolen identity to evade a charge of car theft and was actually leading a somewhat ordinary life making decent money under the assumed name while the real guy was slogging through life not doing all that well. The thief did not really take anything from the victim, other than his name and maybe a little abstract dignity.
