Phil Collins R&R Hall of Fame Induction

I just read that he’ll be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist this fall. (Collins was already honored as part of Genesis.)

He had a string of major hits throughout the 1980s that still resonate with me. I especially remember listening to Another Day in Paradise as I drove to and from work in L.A., with homeless people on so many street corners.

Ed Sullivan will also be recognized posthumously for having so many groups and singers on his show. Those of us who are old enough will never forget seeing The Beatles for the first time in 1964. In my case, I watched with my family on a black-and-white Dumont TV set.

I will probably never understand how the RRHOF works. He should have been inducted in the 90's, early 2000's at the latest.

Nobody deserves it more but it's yet another example of waiting until the artist is either on their deathbed or passed. the RRHOF is a joke.

Have you ever been? I went once and was very underwhelmed. It's like a bigger Hard Rock Cafe without the food.

Never have but I could definitely see it when watching some of the ceremonies. I remember Rush being elated but I felt like they (just like Phil) had been shafted for so long that they deserved it long before, they were always consummate professionals but I thought it was total bullshi then, too.

I completely agree that Collins (and many others) either had their inductions delayed or haven't even been invited: Styx, Devo, Supertramp, and Boston come to mind. But I'm a big Phil Collins fan, so happy to see he's getting the recognition, even if it's years later than it ought to be. I went through some stressful times in the 80s, and his solo music helped me through.

And when you look at some of the other acts that are in ahead of Phil (Radiohead and The Cure to name 2) it just doesn’t make sense. Not that those 2 are undeserving, but if Phil had to wait, so could they.

Still blows my mind that Metallica was in before Rush.

Speaking of Rush, I will be seeing them in June in LA. Group from my freshman floor are all going.

I'm envious. I'm a huge Rush fan, and not just because I'm Canadian. Geddy Lee did Take Off with Bob & Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) for their The Great White North album, although that designation would probably be considered racist these days.

BTO and The Guess Who are two other notable R&R HoF snubs of bands from Canada.

IIRC, I went to see Springsteen at The Forum. We sat behind the stage, but he and the band paid a lot of attention to us.

The only other time I had a not-in-front position at a concert was for Tina Turner, with Joe Cocker as the opener. He looked like he was going to keel over, but he sounded great.
