Photo books and printing

Hello my friends,

I've never really bothered to print my own street photos and often just threw them into my digital shoebox.

I sometimes print individual 13X19 photos for my home and mount/matt board and frame.

However I really want to make some nice photo books on high quality paper and quality inks. I had used a local book maker for wedding clients in the local market but that person has shut up shop in December and is now outsourcing to other larger chain companies.

Is there a particular service that you would recommend that is both high quality (respectful of color profiles) and most importantly affordable?

I had been looking at using MILK with Photo luster or eggshell... has anybody here used this service?

Have you considered hand made books?

Or perhaps using a print-on-demand service like MagCloud where books can be printed one-off for a reasonable price? Or are you thinking about something more higher end in medium to large quantities (very expensive)?

you know, I had considered that , but what I was hoping to make (as contrived as it sounds and by no means in ANY WAY would I put my street photography work in the same galaxy as other established photography books that you might buy on Amazon), but I was hoping to get that same feeling of opening a bound photography book on archival quality halide paper.

Have you personally used MagCloud before? Happy with the print quality ?

I'm very happy with MagCloud. I've done around 8 or so different books, in different sizes, for different projects using MagCloud. One was for a photo project in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood to support a local charity via book sales. A few of them are in the photo below, with some of my hand-made books - housed in wood boxes I made and tins. And a handmade double accordion book of Alcatraz prison prints. I want to try a larger double accordion book - perhaps around 7 to 8 inches by 10 inches

If I were to ever do a hardbound photo book in quantity, I'd start with making prototypes using MagCloud before spending the big bucks on a large print run for expensive bound books.
