I think the real reason he resigned was to remove jurisdiction from the ethics inquiry. If he thinks the new congress will proceed with the ethics inquiry, he’ll likely bow out. But a lot depends on the final makeup of the house and how many Gaetz-friendly members there are, and whether they’re willing to torpedo the speaker in order to stock the ethics committee with people who don’t mind a little pedophilia.

My guess is he won’t return, though, because that just puts a target on him, and law enforcement may get involved (based on some of the evidence that has already leaked, it’s looking like crimes were committed).

Don’t know what to make of this as Gaetz is generally savvy. I can’t see Trump pardoning him for this specific action and it sounds like close to nobody would want him to. Maybe there’s an agreement a Trump DOJ won’t pursue the charges claiming there isn’t enough evidence (when you completely discount all the evidence).

But if he committed statutory rape in FL, then the DOJ has zero jurisdiction. It would be handled by the FL courts. If he did it in DC, then maybe. And if he did it in any of the 31 states with age of consent of 16, then there is no crime. Creepy, but no crime.

Why did Trump pick him in the first place? What greater service to the public did this serve? Nobody can kiss his ass and also be at least semi-competent or not credibly accused of paying for sex with minors?

I think Trumps picks are meant to be insulting and to show he has no allegiance to the party or the country. He’s just going to do what he wants to do and good luck stopping him.

To Trump and probably many of his supporters he feels they voted for him and nothing else, certainly not for the Republican Party. Republican politicians are just there to do his dirty work when needed and will be shamed and tossed out if they don’t.

Similarly if Bernie won his supporters certainly wouldn’t see it as an endorsement of the Democrat party. He just needed them to get the votes.
