Say what you want about Taylor, she knows how to motivate people and getting out the vote is the best possible way to effect change . It will surely piss off Republicans as freedom for anyone to vote has always been an issue with their party. Top comment on Reddit "Republicans about to try and raise the voting age to 40".

At this point I think her talent as being an influencer has surpassed her talent as a musician. From what I’ve heard from fans of her music but don’t look at her as a role model, the last couple releases have not been great. Glad she’s using her influence for something positive and not tips on how to make ends meet as a millionaire single mom.

This last tour had record sellouts everywhere she went, including six at the same arena in LA alone which is insane. She's pretty much a mega star right now.

The Rolling Stones also regularly sell out arenas. Doesn't mean their latest releases are great. Pop music will always have those who stay at the top largely due to nostalgia and massive industry support and promotion.

Just saying that if you're going to bash someone for their music maybe be sure they're not one of the highest selling acts on the planet. Maybe it's better framed as not suited to your taste, which I get.

I’ve never connected with Swift or Beyoncé’s music and they’re likely the two biggest acts on the planet. Then again, I’m a 53 yo white guy, it’s probably not directed at me. Every woman I know, regardless of age, seems to love Bey.

Exactly the same, I’m a butt rocker from the 80s and never been a fan of either TBH.

From a podcast somewhere?

And videos and the relatively few people I know who listen to her, directly and indirectly…indirectly by playing her classic hits and I’ve never heard anything newer. I don’t follow specific Taylor Swift news. It just randomly pops up.

We all have bands and artists that we’ll be lifetime fans of. Can you think of any of yours that have been in the game for 2 decades where the newer music is consistently on par or better than the early work? I can’t with any of mine.

I liked Beyonce because she's been around for some time - I think I first saw her name on the Men In Black soundtrack from 1996/1997... that was a smidge before Destiny's Child broke big. So while I've moved to mostly listening to old music exclusively and haven't listened to her in around 15/16 years, I still had listened to her for around 10-12 by that point.

I haven't listened to her stuff since her first couple of albums though.

I don't know anything Taylor Swift sings, though I respect the hell out of her. She's on that level of Beyonce and past stars like Michael Jackson and the like. I'm a Stevie Wonder guy myself - himself no stranger to politics and standing up for what is right. Then again, Stevie Wonder is no Ted Nugent. 😁

Probably a subject for it’s own topic, but where is today’s angry political music? When I was growing up in the 80’s and 90’s it was all over the place from rap to punk to metal. And of course there was the political music of the 60’s… can’t think of anything specific from the 70’s. I feel like as soon as the 00’s hit political music just stopped being made. It all became about glorifying consumerism or the 1 billionith angle on a broken heart.

Remember when Tom Petty came out with We Need Peace In LA? It was immediately following the LA riots like a week. He probably should have taken a lot more time with that because it was not good.

It is kind of a conundrum, as far as commercialism goes. Good music rises out of pain and suffering (true of art in general; cf classic Blues), so when you hit the big time, that edge goes away and you slide into making derivative pablum.

Follow the money ... to the cookie-cutter suburbs and little boxes, made of ticky-tacky. We do not really want to torture our artists to get good art, but making them rich is not working.
