It just occurred to me that the last CPU I designed to completion before I switched careers had 100 million transistors (depending on how you count), and I assure you it was a lot of work designing that thing. And M1 Max is, what, 50 *billion* transistors?
(Of course, if that thing had 10 cores that would have probably gotten us to 1 billion). We also didn’t have a GPU (we had bought ATI, but I left before they did their first chip with GPU). And a lot of the M1 Pro/Max transistors are RAMs, but that probably only accounts for a billion. Amazing feat, these things are.
