Ukraine taking it to Russia

Here is the RIA Novosti statement about "denazificaion". RIA Novosti is an official government media, so this is effectively Vlad's position. It is very long and not at all pleasant to even skim.
… De-Nazifying is the measure applied towards the Nazi follower masses that one is not able to subject to direct punishment as war criminals because of technicalities. The Nazis who took up arms should be destroyed to the fullest … All of them are equally involved in extreme cruelty against the civilian population … There must be a total lustration … Besides the top leaders, a significant part of the masses are guilty as accomplices of Nazism, the passive Nazis. They supported and indulged the Nazi power. The just punishment of this part of the population is possible through inflicting the unescapable hardships of our just war …​

In other words, Russia's war is a noble cause and the things we are calling "war crimes" are merely necessities of the purge of the scourge.

Ironic, in a non-amusing way, how much this sounds like a sort of reworking of Mein Kampf, with its implacable othering. The programs they propose for "reforming" Ukraine seem to have been plagiarized from numerous dystopian novels/movies.
 
Reminds me of the Winter war where Finland held off the mighty Soviet army in 1940. I don't understand how easily the Russian army could invoke such cruelty and horrific aggression toward a country that was part of the Soviet Bloc. It wasn't too long ago that the nazis did the same thing as they marched on towards Moscow.

1. Dehumanization. Propaganda is a hell of a drug.
2. It may not have been so easy looking at Russian morale.

But it wouldn’t be the first time Ukraine suffered due to the malice and/or incompetence of the Kremlin.
 
What’s laid bare here in this war Russia has needlessly inflicted in Ukraine and, more importantly, with the lies they’re using to justify it, is how not far off the mark the GOP here in the states is. No, they’re not inflicting war (yet) and killing civilians. But they’re using democracy as a crutch to gain power. Other than enslaving people or stripping away their rights, telling people their vote doesn’t count is next in line. So the GOP doesn’t have the courage to say “we want power, we want a white Christian nation to be the dominating vision of America” to rally their troops, they’ll tell them every election they lose was stolen to achieve the same level of anger and engagement with their base.

What the Trump cult is doing is not far from what Putin and Russia are doing. We just haven’t gotten to the point they are yet.

They've certainly got the basics and precepts nailed down; lying, efficiently propagating fake news, trying to manipulate elections, a dry run at the Capitol couched as "legitimate political discourse," etc.

I'm still extremely concerned. What we witnessed should be a wake up call. Sadly, I think many people are oblivious - or for some reason just don't give two phucks.

I think Trump supporters are the closest thing to brown shirts we've seen since WWII, it's disturbing but I'm glad we were able to at least turn it around to a degree. They're still there but forced to crawl back under their rocks without their leader giving them a platform for their hate any longer.

Just like people make comparisons to the USA and Nazi Germany, we are not there but when truth takes a hit, corruption is considered ok if I win, and power grabs by cheating at the rules you profess to believe in, it is heading down the exact same path, just a matter of time.

Poland has sent Ukraine a couple hundred T72 tanks, enough for 2 brigades and about half of Poland’s tank force (the U.S. is selling Poland a couple hundred Abrams tanks to replace their stock). Sounds like several eastern european countries will also open up their repair infrastructure, so that Ukraine can get repaired the hundreds of Russian tanks they have captured and turn them against the Russians.

Vladimir’s going to be pissed.

I can’t get over the fact Russia’s Black Sea flagship was sunk by a military that for all intents and purposes has no Navy. The Ukrainian Navy is more like a small coast guard. That and the Moskova’s primary role was providing air defense. The missiles used weren’t exactly state of the art in that they’re subsonic and presumably could have been intercepted if detected/responded to.

You can bet we’re giving Ukraine tons of intel and guidance behind the scenes.

It’s my understanding along with Howitzers we are also sending them counter battery radars which can pinpoint the source of incoming artillery and direct soldiers where to aim their fire. If this is widely fielded, I suspect the Russians will be suffering a lot of destroyed artillery pieces.

Apparently Russian generals seem to be blaming each other for the failures in Ukraine, likely to save their skin. That’s always a good sign of a functioning military. There also appear to be signs Russia is running low on missiles and other equipment.

Germany has apparently agreed to send self propelled artillery systems to Ukraine. I’m glad to see they’re finally stepping up.

I should also mention the best artillery Russia has has a range of about 18 miles. The US howitzers have a range up to nearly 25 miles. The German system has a comparable range. The automated French Ceaser artillery system they’ve provided has a range of up to 28 miles and can also fire 6 rounds a minute continuously which is twice as fast as the Russian howitzers.

I’ve been told by someone knowledgeable that the US is providing more artillery rounds for our donated howitzers than their gun barrels can actually handle in their specified lifespan. Presumably some ammunition will get destroyed but it’s still an incredible amount of fire power getting handed over.

Side note: the head of the operation is a 4-star general whose promotion was temporarily held up due to DoD expectations it would be blocked by Trump …. because she is a woman. It’s obvious she is highly capable, and yet another great example of why we should not elect leaders who discriminate based on sex, race, religion, or other similar factors. When we do that, we lose out on some of the best and brightest.
