I remember the now seeming naive discussions about a future with automated cashiers. How the automated registers would put out of work workers who had the audacity to want a living wage, so they should be grateful or they'd be out. I guess this is a compromise? Keep the workers, but at even LOWER pay. Yay?!

I remember the now seeming naive discussions about a future with automated cashiers. How the automated registers would put out of work workers who had the audacity to want a living wage, so they should be grateful or they'd be out. I guess this is a compromise? Keep the workers, but at even LOWER pay. Yay?!

Here we tend to scan our own items, bag our own items and pay. Been that way for years. Not really sure what problem this is trying to fix.

We resisted self-checkout at the local Target for years. Then the Pandemic gave them the excuse to go almost totally self-checkout. Last year there were maybe 20 self-checkout kiosks and 3-6 cashiers. The last few times there were only 2-3 cashiers, and that was only when the self-checkout lines got too long. They would have workers go to the front registers. They had 2-3 workers working both of the self-checkout lines (one in the front, one in the rear) as too many customers don't know how to use them, there were occasional scanning issues, and to prevent line skipping that still happens regularly if it isn't watched by staff. And forget about customers using cash and/or coupons.

It's beyond ridiculous seeing a customer with dozens of items using self-checkout. After a certain number of items the machine gets confused with the items being put on the shelf in order to scan additional items. And all the time spent assisting the customer could be put to better use with old fashion cashiers. It would be much quicker and less of a PITA.

They probably can’t prevent it due to age discrimination, but whenever elderly individuals go to the self-checkout, you can bet they will get confused and call the attendant over repeatedly. I see it and wonder “why didn’t you just go to the regular checkout? I just want to buy these 3 items and get home...."

And even for those that don’t get confused, the machine (supposedly) protects against theft by weighing the items you put in the bagging area. Except... not all the items are the weight the machine expects them to be, probably due to some kind of data entry error. So then you have to wait for the attendant to look through your stuff and see that you’re not trying to steal anything.

There’s a Walmart by my nieces house that is 100% self checkout. I never go to Walmart but I saw it when I went with her.

I use the self-checkout at Walmart, only because there never seems to be any lanes open with an actual living person to check me out...

What REALLY riles me up though is when the Greeter tries to get me to wait while they look over my receipt and my purchases on my way out the door; I tell them to piss off, if they want to ensure I am not stealing anything then open some check-outs with real people running them...!

I get a brain freeze when I have to enter non-barcoded items at Kroger's in Virginia. The husband has to do it if we want to get the hell out of there in a decent amount of time. The one closest to us has twice as many self-checkout machines compared to cashier stations (and they never have all cashier stations staffed). Thankfully they don't have receipt check at Kroger's like they do at the Target here in NYC. We usually just carry our items in hand with the receipt because I will explode if I have to self-checkout, bag my stuff, and then open my bag for some douchebag racially profiling me/us.

From what I've researched so far, there's a real opportunity to disrupt the retail industry with "Just Walk Out" technology. I just posted a thread about it if anybody's curious.
