Hello car enthusiasts, wrench tuners, motorsport fanatics, the fast and/or the furious who live life a 1/4 mile at a time :D

The Car Thread has been expanded to an entire forum, it looked like there was enough diversity in car topics, that it would be helpful to have a larger parking lot :D So I'm going to start a few topics, move posts from the existing single thread into what I believe is the correct location. If you think I've miscategorized, or you have any general suggestions, please feel free to hit me up ... and I'll feel free to ignore you.

I'm kidding of course. :)

Probably.

@DT:

Might I also suggest a sticky, and/or a wiki post - either in the first post of this thread - or, as a separate sticky/wiki in itself - of all good sources on cars that can be consulted (magazines, writers, reviewers, TV programmes, YouTube channels, etc)?

There is such a post - the very first post, - which, by virtue of being the first post, serves almost as a sticky, though a separate stickyy might be better, and whcih is also a 'wiki' post, meaning anyone with appropriate permissions can add to it as needed - which contains all sorts of interesting and useful information and recommendations - in the classic (and long running "espresso enthusiasts" thread on MR.

I've wondered this, too. Though the interest of many of the members seems to be focused on EVs, if people are expected to talk about all automobiles, the name should reflect that. And "EV Garage" is strange to me because it is sort of, for lack of a better term, "cutesy," when almost every other forum is very simply named (Photography, Sports, Gaming Forum, Open Chat).

(Also, "Gaming Forum" should just be "Gaming" for consistency.)

I can be very persnickety, can't I? (:

Had a guy playing chicken with me on the highway after he perceived I cut him off. No, I did not, I just had positional advantage and he was overly agressive. 🤔 Anyway, I want a dash cam and it seems many of the attach to the windshield. How about yours, if you have one? What do you like or dislike about it. Any advice?

Tesla's new FSD "Mad Max" mode:
"It speeds and swerves through traffic to get you to your destination faster."
NHTSA had opened a new preliminary investigation into Tesla following dozens of complaints of its EVs running stop signs or crossing into oncoming traffic while operating under FSD.
(Arstechnica)

What could go wrong?

There really does need to be some sort of happy medium between little old lady from Pasadena and normal driving. I’m not sure about this new feature, but it was so passive and unrealistic for normal driving conditions that it wasn’t even worth using.

Black Vue gets constantly very good reviews, they're a bit pricey, several source (from C&D to Reddit) suggested the VIOFO products are nearly as good, but decently cheaper. For the latter, the A229 model (which is a front and rear setup) seems to be the go to.

There's a couple of brands that have things like OEM specific mounting, where they replace the plastic shrouds around the rear view, the install looks amazing, but I've heard the actual camera tech is pretty mid-range.

I think this is a run a search, pick a brand, get it installed, the sooner the better :)

What they need is open standards for communication between all of the different car automation platforms. FSD isn't enough - we want the cars to all communicate with each other, like a swarm - so they can more intelligently move traffic efficiently. No more traffic jams. Your ride automagically takes you an alternate route when the interstate is at capacity.

And...when we finally get to the point that humans (which are more prone to error) are no longer driving - they can increase the speeds, allowing much more traffic on the existing freeways.

Edit: Oh...and we need all of the vehicles on the road to have FSD before we can add altitude to the formula. Humans have enough issues with two dimensions for driving. :D

That would be great. Now get everyone to agree on not holding on to their 19XX model Y, because "I want choice."

Self driving cars should be insured by the car makers - (at least from a liability standpoint) - as any faults that cause an accident are their liability, not the car owner's.

I think when the majority of people are using self-driving cars, that the insurance on legacy vehicles, which are not, will become astronomical.

Also, I think once everyone has self-driving cars that car ownership will decline. And perforce cars will likely cease to exist (outside of tracks). There's no point in owning a vehicle when there's no fun in driving anymore. Just take an Uber wherever you need to go.

I want a rear camera, I’ve got a convertible, I don’t wires all over, a camera on the rear window is not an option ( cause the top comes down), am going to talk to a local dash cam installer and see how much more they charge for this service. I think it would require a camera on the exterior rear of the car, unless they know something I don’t, would want to run wires hidden, I assume, a hard wire.

Then the easiest setup is a single front mount camera that has both front and rear input (so it's probably a bit rear restricted with the top up).

Otherwise you're going to have to figure out a good rear mounting spot inside the vehicle (like a halo bar or something), or go with a much more custom install that involves rear mount, a weatherproof camera (mounted in the rear) like by the plate, lower fascia, needs a custom bracket, most likely making perm modifications, etc.

V14 isn't too bad if you never go past Hurry, lol. I still think the speed choices are inconsistent. It does try to keep up with traffic, but if there is no one around it still will randomly choose to go too fast or not fast enough. I dunno what they changed, but routing seems to be somewhat broken. It doesn't seem to actually know where my work parking lot is anymore.

Like horses, folks will still own cars. I think older folks will keep some scenes alive (like the classic car scene). I am unsure when that (or if) will go away.

Umm...not a lot of city dwellers owning horses. Are you in Montana? ;) When we get great enough density in the batteries, we'll see more electric big rigs. That and the decline of internal combustion engines will eventually make petroleum a niche market...reducing availability and driving up the costs. So, our beloved classic cars will eventually become museum pieces. *sniff*

Me, I've always wanted either an E-type Jaguar or one of these to bomb around in, in the summer time. The 2011 Z4 that I had was certainly a thrill....checked off the roadster box on the bucket list. Heh. But I'd still love a classic. :)

People who live in cities like new york likely don't own cars already. So no real change for them. Cities like Virginia Beach or Norfolk will take far longer to get people to give up cars due to the way these cities make their money (military and tourism). I do agree that folks will switch over to EV's before ditching personally owned vehicles, though.
