Summary: "What Movie Are You Watching?"

Key Points & Conclusions

  • Wide variety of films discussed: Members reviewed movies ranging from classic films (Planet of the Apes, A Christmas Story) to recent releases (2025-2026 titles), spanning multiple genres including action, sci-fi, drama, and comedy.

  • Streaming dominance: Significant discussion about home viewing vs. theater experiences, with members noting that premium rental prices (-30) are too high compared to subscription services like Disney+ (.99/month).

  • Notable recommendations: High praise for Godzilla Minus One (Japanese film), Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace (Bond films), Companion (AI thriller), and the Harry Potter franchise. Huntn particularly enjoyed rewatching the early Potter films.

  • Mixed quality observations: Several films criticized as mediocre despite good production values or casts, including Project Power, F1, and Anaconda. Members noted that high budgets and talented actors don't guarantee quality storytelling.

  • Theater concerns: Some members expressed reluctance to attend cinemas during the pandemic period due to mask and safety policies.

Areas of Disagreement

  • Goblet of Fire's quality: Herdfan strongly criticized the Harry Potter film as non-essential to the series, while Huntn defended it as important for introducing Voldemort's return.

  • Brad Pitt's acting: Huntn expressed personal dislike of Pitt's acting abilities, categorizing him similarly to George Clooney.

  • Batman franchise direction: Renzatic worried upcoming Batman films were becoming too "edgy-gritty" post-Dark Knight, while DT was optimistic about the detective-focused approach.

Frackham Hall (2025)- Downton Abbey spoof, worth some chuckles. You might recognize the 2 actors. on the right :)
Damion Lewis, Tom Felton

Companion (2025)- Wow, what a good AI movie. Do not watch any trailers for this, go in blind, you will be surprised. 🥰

Best Picture Nominees
  • Bugonia"
  • "F1"
  • "Frankenstein"
  • "Hamnet"
  • "Marty Supreme"
  • "One Battle After Another"
  • "The Secret Agent"
  • "Sentimental Value"
  • "Sinners"
  • "Train Dreams"
Yesterday I’d seen just one of these movies, Sinners which I liked. After its win, we watched One Battle After Another, centered on members of a “terrorist” group in modern America fighting the system, but mostly in the aftermath of a series of events. I found the story to be interesting, a reflection of today’s America, with some intriguing elements, but overall it seemed to drag and I was not really drawn in

Usually, if I’m not blown away by a Best Picture, it makes me wonder what wrong with movies these days. I mean it’s all subjective isn’t it? It also seems like DeCaprio has lost his edge, or maybe that was a good job of portraying a character? It’s interesting he is prominently displayed on most of the movie posters, but I think the other actors who outshined him.

Mercy 2026 (Prime)
Crime drama with Chris Pratt as a police officer accused of killing his wife and being tried in The Mercy Court by an AI judge with 90 min to prove his innocence. Surprisingly good. I would say that 90 min is bull even if the premise of this court is that the evidence is pretty much slam dunk. 🤔

F1 (2025)- Brad Pitt is not an actor I like, i put him in the George Clooney category, a pretty face, but nothing that ever grabbed me, but I’m always ready to give most actors another chance. F1 should be an adrenaline rush, but I just was not feeling it, did not finish cause I really did not care about Sonny Hayes and I disliked the music. Ford vs Ferrari was a much better story. Yet note, this movie got high marks at Rotten Tomatoes. Maybe it’s me. 🤔

Apex (2026)- Survival thriller. Charlize Theron, it was ok, nothing over the top, emphasis on realistic climbing, and a very bad person in the wilds.

Rewatched the original Carrie and I had this observation....

How the hell did they get away with so much nudity of high school girls in the 70's and 80's? The actresses are usually older than the parts they are playing and I guess you could argue they are 18-year-old seniors but that's not even addressed at all. And it's not just blurred in the background. There's a lot of lingering shots of just body parts. It's just gratuitous.

*drops what I’m doing and rushes to Blockbuster to rent a copy of Carrie…*

On a Harry Potter roll, the last 4 nights, all excellent:
  • Sorcerer’s Stone
  • Chamber of Secrets
  • Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Goblet of Fire

Sorry, but there is nothing excellent about the Goblet of Fire.😉

That entire book/movie could be removed from the series and it wouldn’t be missed.

What do you know? The return of the Dark Lord, not missed, are you mad?
😁
Tonight: Order of the Pheonix featuring the most single hated character in the series, Dolores Umbridge. 🙃

Godzilla Minus One (2023)

Wow, great movie, a Godzilla origins movie of sorts. Japanese movie with subtitle, an origins film, characters you can like even care about, and stunning visuals. The title is a bit strange at first glance, it’s a reference to Japan being at zero at the end of WWII and Godzilla appears to take it to minus one by trashing Tokyo.

  • Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince- the heavy shit is falling now in Harry’s world.

Ad Astra (2019)- An awful story with great visuals. Summary: Famous astronaut son, goes off to find famous astronaut father whose deep space search for life mission out around Neptune is threatening the Earth, but the father is the threat, the authorities don’t want him to go, people die, and imo whatever the threat is, is resolved in a waste of time journey, and includes some far fetched ideas which I won’t into. 😐

edit: correction the threat was neutralized in a dissasatisfying way and felt like a waste of my time.
