Very surprised by the name leak for macOS. I can’t recall this happening previously. My understanding is that the name is kept very secret among the marketing department and other top brass. It really makes me wonder who is leaking to Gurman.

It'd be funny if Tahoe wasn't really the new name, but was deliberately given to an Apple employee suspected of leaking.

Anyway, with the upcoming switch to numbering by year, I think I'm going to care about macOS names even less than before. Not that I mind California places – I lived there for quite awhile – but the names made it harder to remember if I was running the latest version.

Maybe they can do small cats from cartoons and stories: macOS Garfield, Sylvester, Felix, Tom, Stimpy, or Cheshire (for an OS that gradually eats up disk space).

I won't mind UI/UX changes, as long as they're primarily in service of usability, or at least don't hinder it. In macOS, iOS, and iPadOS settings, for example, I used to pride myself on quickly getting to the one I wanted. Now, I often have to search to find what I'm looking for, and even then, it's confusing. Some of this is surely because there are more things that can be changed, and my age may also have something to do with it, LOL, but I think it goes beyond that.

One of the many challenges Apple faces is designing interfaces for people who vary considerably in their technical expertise and experience. I wonder if AI can eventually help with this by gently modifying the UI as the user gains proficiency.

Also, UI design doesn't make a difference if certain tasks that should be central to a device's use aren't doable. With visionOS, for example, it's difficult to understand why I still can't do something as simple as taking a phone call without picking up my iPhone and using pass though to enter the code or taking the headset off. And the limited ability to arrange apps often makes it feel like I'm using the 2007 iPhone.

It's rumored that Apple won't introduce any new hardware this time. That makes me even more interested, since they'll have to focus on software.

I have high hopes that this time usability will improve through the use of z-layering and buttons that look like buttons. We will see.

Five more iOS 26 features leak from a reliable source

New features for Messages, Music, Notes, and CarPlay have possibly leaked ahead of their reveal for iOS 26 during WWDC 25.

Nothing too exciting.

1) Messages app automatic translation for incoming texts “other than the one the user has set for the system.” Not quite sure what that means - e.g. my phone is set for English and German keyboards, but the system language is English. If a German text comes in, I don’t need it translated (otherwise I wouldn’t have installed the German keyboard). In any event, I suspect few people get messages in languages they don’t understand, and when they do it’s often spam. I guess this will be useful for some people, though.

2) Polls in Messages app. I can see this being useful for some people with big group texts trying to pick places to meet, where to eat, movies to see, etc. But it seems like it could be done right now with a Messages app, so not really a big deal.

3) Apple music animated lock screen albums. *shrug*

4) Apple notes markdown output. I hope they add more notes features than this - notes has been getting a lot of love lately.

5) CarPlay UI changes to reflect the new UI design. Duh.
