I enjoyed some of the prior series. This could be good. Or it could suck, Or it could be good and then Amazon cancels it for no reason. Who knows.

Or it could suck and Amazon signs off on 20 seasons and 3 movies :D

I only watched the original series, quite a few seasons, though I still think there were a ton more. Plus spin offs of the spins offs.

I’m mixed on the news, as it really could go either way.

The showrunner’s recent work wasn’t well received. He’s being supported by the folks at the helm of the franchise when it ran aground last time, along with Devlin and Emmerich who were rather meh on the TV series to begin with. And because it is a continuation, you have the fact that Earth was the galaxy’s superpower at the end of things, and had basically defeated the pantheon of aliens posing as human gods. So need to develop some sort of new problem or antagonist, or find some way to tell a story around Earth being the 800lb gorilla in galactic politics.

Does it have a chance to be good? Yes. Does this group inspire confidence? I’m not sure it does.

I've watched bits and pieces of the movies and TV shows in the franchise, but I'd like to get into it more. Is the 1994 movie the best place to start?

yes, though the tone (and actors) in the tv show differs quite a bit. But there are things you need to know from the movie.

The show is pretty fun - similar to old school star trek in tone and structure. At least the first couple of series. I never did get through the most recent series.

I've had a possibly unjustified aversion to series produced by Amazon. It's always felt like less of a bonus and more like something forced on you to justify the cost of Prime, especially as they've raised the price which is less about increased shipping costs and more about forcing you to subsidize their production studio.

They’ve had a couple great scifi series, both of which they cancelled too soon. Peripheral, and The Expanse.

This is totally what the first series reminded me of.

Rereading my post I was like, WUT, hahaha, I meant to say I only watched the first series, Stargate SG-1, and only the first 4-5 seasons of that and it was a lot of fun (that was back in the day, I had the DVD boxed sets :D)

We had made a weekly routine of SG-1 and Farscape when it was back on the air. We were along the for the Anubis ride, but it did change the storytelling style of the show, and so Season 8 and on we didn't enjoy as much. Just more from the perspective of it falling into a sort of rut around "the big bad", constant power escalation and macguffins, and dropping the side stories that existed to push the characters in interesting ways and present interesting ideas like the early seasons did.

We never really got into Atlantis as much, although we did watch the whole series, mostly because it had all the same problems. We just did a re-watch of SG-1, and haven't bothered with Atlantis. Universe was even harder to get into for me, and my partner didn't even bother after 6 episodes.

So, I'll watch it, and hope it's halfway decent, but I suspect that the time for shows like SG-1's early seasons has come and gone, unfortunately.

Stargate was our first binge-watch back in the day. We were streaming on Netflix, but then they switched to disk only. We got to the end of the first bit, where McGuyver's contract ended, the show ended and then they said "Oh, wait, here's another baddie you've never seen before, but, oh, well". We finished it out, and watched at least Stargate: Atlanta, too. I'll probably watch the reboot.
