Apple confirms Google technology, not Gemini, will help power Siri

Contrary to the headline, Apple did not seemingly confirm Gemini is powering any feature. They did say Google technology, though. This likely means a custom transformer model will help Apple achieve the first generation of the new Siri, and given the phrasing it does sound like Apple will use Google hardware to train future transformer models. Apple's PCC technology, which is fully Apple and custom, will run the features and guarantees privacy for all users -- something no other cloud provider can promise let alone let you independently see.

The multi-year partnership will lean on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology for future Apple foundational models, according to a statement obtained by CNBC’s Jim Cramer.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users,” Apple wrote.

Yeah. Every dumb headline I'm seeing says Gemini. It would have been actually helpful if CNBC chose to release the full statement I'm assuming that Apple gave them

Apple’s doing the right thing here. No point investing all those billions in what’s going to be a commodity. Eventually they will transition all of it off to their own technology when doing so provides sufficient value-added to the customer. And the cost of that will come way down over time. Meanwhile all these companies investing billions in LLM models will never recoup their investments.

Joint statement from Google and Apple

Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year.

After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards.

According to TechCrunch, "The deal is not exclusive, per a source familiar with the matter."

This official statement confirms Apple is using custom transformer models, and will be able to freely use them however they want, further enhancing and customizing them on their own with 'fine tuning' and adapters

AppleInsider: "Google Gemini tech will be used in the all-new Siri after major Apple AI deal"

AppleInsider: "No, Google Gemini will not be taking over your iPhone, Apple Intelligence, or Siri"

The second headline and article is more accurate than the first, but it would have been most accurate to simply do what I wrote in this post lol. It begs the question why they didn't.

Also Gruber is acting like a tool again:

So this brief bit of phrasing reveals the obvious, awkward truth that Apple Foundation Models didn’t actually have a foundation.

Apple's foundation models exist. They introduced features and innovated in ways no one else has, to provide free and effective machine learning capabilities done in a private way. That he and others choose not to write about it and therefore don't know about any improvements is a reflection of him and what he actually thinks his work is, which is regurgitating whatever narratives are spoon fed to him directly through social media.

It is also clear he doesn't have the first clue as to what any of this is let alone "AI."

This website shows multiple industry-first innovations for transformer models, so no Gruber, Apple foundation models are absolutely innovative.

Is Apple able to train the custom model or is it just a spun off instance like GenAI.mil (is Apple self hosting the model)?

If I understand the above correctly, it seems that dovetails with Apple building its own AI servers in their Houston manufacturing facility.
