Electric Vehicles: General topics

Most of us knew the Aptera design, claims, solar implementation was ... questionable. They were at CES with a supposed "production ready" model, we'll see, the current specs (backed WAY down from the original 1000 mile range target) are 400 miles with a 45kWh battery for $40,000.

And they have this whole right-to-repair mantra - hahaha, that's because owners will be left to fix it themselves since there won't be any service network. This will be a niche product, for wealthy EV enthusiasts to drive to C&C events :D

No, still CCS, sort of indicating to me the iX may not receive a native NACS port if it didn't come with this refresh, and the iX is due to be EOL-ed in '27?

Someone posted a pic of an i5 with a NACS port, I guess some test mule, but were suggesting current models migrating over (including the iX)

Honestly, for us, the very few DCFCs we need, if that requires a few seconds to stick on a NACS>CCS adapter (and that's assuming we'd even use a Tesla SuC), is just zero impact on ownership. We'd wind up hitting some of our usual trips where we use EA anyway (like the Keys) and have to use the opposite adapter (CCS >> NACS) anyway :D

Wow

My home charger is NACS and I don’t want to deal with an adapter every day. I may just wait for the Neue Klasse at the end of the year. I don’t need an x5-sized vehicle. The new X3 will work. (I have to assume the Neue Klasse will have NACS)

Are you still in CA? Maybe you should hold off deciding until you move.

Don't you just have one Tesla? The S? And that would be disposed of for the iX?

i.e., stick on the J1772 adapter and leave it :D

I got a survey email from Central Coast Energy Services saying I have to take their survey in order to keep my rebate and want income documentation. It smells a bit like a scam (phishing) to me.

Swap the charger for a non-Tesla one. Problem solved. You don't even need an electrician to do it, it is no different than changing out a light switch.

I was a member of IBEW local 3 (retired). I ain’t touching it. It’s an 80A dedicated circuit.

Ah, yeah in that case you'd have to replace the breaker as well since there are very few EVSE that do 80A these days. That is more work that just flipping the breaker and replacing the EVSE.

I was more worried about the wire. It’s as thick as a baby’s arm. Bending it into the box took the guy a long time when it was initially installed. (and he had to install a separate emergency cutoff switch because the building inspector got whiny).

The original old tesla wall box is nice enough for me. Very long cable, reliable, etc.

I too have the OG Wall Connector. Had it installed as the built my house. I think Gen 2 came out like a year later. Working with 6 or 4Ga solid core wire is no joke.

Our circuit is 6 Ga stranded wire for a 50A breaker, and not super fun to work with either. 40A EVSE has turned out to be complete overkill for our needs, but it's what we're wired up for, so... eh?

Started with a Clipper Creek, and have a Universal Tesla Wall Connector with the built-in J1772 adapter. If I have to replace it, it will probably be another Clipper Creek / Enphase. But hopefully not for a long time.

I had to drive an '08 Escape around and about yesterday, and let me tell you. It was in the lower 30sF when we set out, and I did not spend more than a minute warming it up, so it felt tight and sluggish at first compared to my Ariya. It was a more-or-less tolerable experience, but boy do I not miss transmissions and idling gas away at long lights.

BMW is stepping up their EV game.

BMW's Latest Concept Gives a Clearer Picture of Upcoming 3-Series EV

  • The BMW Vision Driving Experience is the latest concept to preview the upcoming Neue Klasse EVs, one of which will be an electric variant of the next-generation 3-series sedan.
  • The concept's bodywork and interior are an evolution of the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept, with sharp lighting and a full-width screen on the dashboard beneath the windshield.
  • The concept features the "Heart of Joy," a so-called "superbrain" that will control the driving dynamics functions in the Neue Klasse vehicles.

Eigentlich ist die “Alte Klasse” auch ziemlich gut.

We don't really have a thread for flying vehicles as of yet so I figured this would be as good a place as any to share this video, I shot many of the scenes for this car which I could not share because it was sensitive information at the time. Now NBC News with Lester Holt did a story on it where they shared the footage.

Looks so unnatural.
