Electric Vehicles: General topics

It's funny how a joint car becomes sole possession by one person. In my case Betty (id.4) seems to have become mine and my wife is convinced that it hates her as the other woman. Doors don't open for her, but my profile unlocks the doors and headlight wink as I approach.
I took my wife's 2017 X1 (ICE) on a road trip yesterday and still found it more pleasant than the Tesla, mostly because of the build quality but also all of the controls are simple, tactile, and logically laid out. You won't be digging through submenus for a basic on off function or any of that.

My wife is paying the lease out of her own income. I’m just paying the insurance. Lease is in her name, so as far as I’m concerned it’s her car.

We've been with State Farm for over 15 years and they've been raising their auto coverage rates like crazy over the last couple of years so we've dumped them and went with Costco instead, saving more than $2K a year. I mean we've never had any incidents with them ever, it's like they don't care about their customers at all.

I’ve been using AAA insurance forever. They’ve been ok. When I have to add my daughter to my insurance I may have to find someplace cheaper, though.

Yeah State Farm went up significantly when I got the i4, felt more like it was just to stick it to us than the actual difference in value. We cancelled today now that our other insurance is all setup and they acted surprised but just what do they expect?

I think CSAA charged me $3500 for the i4, which doubled my insurance. Could be because I have the number set too high - for the two old cars, I’d increased my coverage limits quite a bit this year because it added only like $50 or $100 to the annual amount. For the new car I keep the same limits, which probably isn’t necessary, but not sure how much I can lower the rate but lowering the coverage.

The guy on the phone was also chomping at the bit to add my daughter. He brought it up - “you have a child who’s 16, right? you want to add them, right? you sure they don’t drive the cars? because you should add her.”

Also weird: the VIN doesn’t turn up in their database, so we’re insuring a “ 2025 Private Passenger Auto”

We had the same problem with our VIN not showing up, it initially prevented me from getting my HOV sticker but it showed up after about a week and then everything clicked.

i just noticed that CSAA actually charged a lot more - the $3500 was the pro rated amount. Yikes! Ridiculously high. I went in and increased my deductibles and knocked $1000 off it just now. I’ll have to tinker with the coverages on the old cars, but reducing things by half across the board only reduced the rate by another $100 or so, which isn’t worth it to me. I’ll play around and take a look at Costco insurance too.

I'll get the particulars from my wife tonight and share them so you can compare.

awesome, thanks!
With State Farm we were paying around $2200 for 6 months for both of our cars and now we're paying $1600 through Costco with a $1000 deductible for collision and zero comp. The deductible for State Farm was $500 though.

wow, i’m getting shafted. I’ll see what costco says.

argh. Now my wall connector won’t charge the i4 again. I give up.
Do you have a 14-50R in the garage? I switched the receptacle in our garage from a 10-50 to a 14-50 (it was just a little bit of wiring) and use the EVSE that came with the car (I plan to get a plug-in charger soon, but the cable works fine for now).

You are it’s the connector? I had to rest my i4 because of some error, it’s quick and easy. 🤷‍♂️

Not sure, but my wife’s going to EVGO tomorrow and will try to charge there. Good chance it could be the connector - supposedly this original model can’t even charge 2023 and later Teslas, so it wouldn’t surprise me if J1772 doesn’t work so well with an adapter on them.

Nope. My house has some other weird-ass NEMA plug behind the dryer - looks like it’s 30A and has no ground. The only time I had a 14-50 was for a week when I got the Tesla. They first came and installed that until the wall connector was available, then they put the wall connector on the box.

In theory I could remove the tesla wall connector and put a 14-50 there myself, but the breaker is at least 80A (I can’t remember), and the wires are super thick and annoying to deal with, so I’d rather just have an electrician come.

In the end, we’re going to have one NACS and one J1772 car until probably august or september, then in 3 years we’ll end up with 2 NACS cars, so I feel like the Tesla Universal charger is the easiest way to solve the problem. That way I can open the Tesla’s charge port from the handle, don’t have to deal with manually attaching/detaching an adapter, etc.

I’ll see if my wife lets me reboot her car tomorrow - she’s getting cranky about it.

I don't see anything that indicates the Gen 1/2 WC's wouldn't work with J1772 compatible vehicles. There isn't anything in them that would prevent it from working (the Gen 3's can toggle to not allow non Teslas). Technically they are not NACS, but I don't seem to have any issues charging my 2024 Model 3 on mine. When it fails does the WC lights indicate anything?

Yes. Flashing red.

Gen 2 shouldn’t be an issue. Gen 1 has the known issue.

Fuck protesting. People should start blowing them up. (After hours, when no-one's there, of course).

You have to wonder how it is the police commissions can agree to wasting their resources protecting these?! Last I checked you don't have enough officers?!
Agree with the protests/message but not the vandalization, cops are just doing their jobs there.
